Sonny & Carly #4  March 17 - June 5, 2000

Sonny and Carly are relaxing at his island. Carly questions Sonny about Maria, what does she do and for whom? Later, Carly decides to celebrate her divorce from AJ at the Casino. After winning big at roulette, Sonny advises her to quit and walk away a winner. But she refuses and insists on betting it all. Sonny signals the dealer and Carly loses. She wants to know where an ATM is, he gives her a $1.00 chip. She bets it, and this time Sonny signals for her to win. He tells her to let it ride, she wins again. Then he tells her to walk away, she wants to risk it all. He drags her out of there and tells her he is trying to teach her to walk away when she is ahead (not just when gambling). Cute scene as Sonny tells her she is strong and a fighter. She tells him she is getting to him and that she is starting to grow on him. He says, "yeah like something in a refrigerator". They sit quietly watching the ocean and talk about their baby learning to swim. Sonny receives a call from that Sorel has kidnapped Bobbie. He and Carly prepare to leave immediately.

Carly and Sonny arrived home, and Sonny instructed Johnny to find Roy and bring him there. Carly began to phone the police, but Sonny convinced her that doing so would get Bobbie killed. Carly was scared, and after pleading with Sonny to promise her that Bobbie would be all right, she and Sonny had a long comforting hug. He sent her upstairs to get some rest as Johnny entered with Roy. Roy was angry, but told Sonny that he'd found Bobbie and she was all right so far. Sonny wanted to know about the meeting, and Roy told him that Sorel wanted Sonny to move his product. Sonny replied that that wasn't going to happen, and Carly came down the stairs in time to hear this. She misinterpreted his remark as a refusal to help Bobbie, and stated that they had to do whatever Sorel wanted. Sonny told her to calm down, and pointed out that Roy had seen her mother and she was not hurt. Carly went to patch up Roy's injuries, and while she was getting the supplies, Sonny cautioned Roy against upsetting Carly. He was mainly interested in how Bobbie could have found out where the meeting was being held, and Roy insisted that it had not been from him or Benny. Roy said he hadn't been followed, and thought perhaps Bobbie had been there before he'd arrived. Sonny thought about the note in the desk, and remembered Bobbie had dropped by before they'd left for the Dominican Republic. He began to ask questions and Carly caved, admitting that she'd unlocked "that stupid desk", given Bobbie the address, and "told you living together wasn't a good idea".

Roy, Sonny and Carly anxiously awaited contact from Sorel. Sonny fumed over Carly giving Bobbie the key and she apologized. He admonished Roy for not waiting for him, saying that his botched rescue of Bobbie now meant they didn’t have a clue where she was and that Sorel would have heavy security around her. Finally, the call came from Sorel and he told Sonny that he had a shipment he wanted moved. Sonny put him off and Sorel told him that it was the only way he’d get what he had that Sonny wanted. Afterward, he told Carly that the call had been casino business and sent her upstairs. Roy rightly guessed that the call had been Sorel and Sonny informed him that Sorel wanted him to move drugs, which he never does. Roy told him that he’d better be ready to do whatever Sorel asks, then left. Later, Carly asked Sonny if they would ever be able to get back to where they had been before all this happened. She apologized again for giving Bobbie the key to his desk and asked if it had been so long since he had loved anyone that he’d forgotten what it was like when you would do anything for them.

At the penthouse, Carly was anxious and demanded to know if Sonny had received any word about Bobbie. He hadn't, so Carly started to go to the police but Sonny convinced her that doing so would get Bobbie killed and insisted that she just let him handle everything. Roy arrived as Sonny and Carly argued over who was to blame for Bobbie's kidnapping. Sonny maintained that if Carly hadn't given Bobbie the key to the desk, she wouldn't have found the meeting, but Carly insisted that she had to help Bobbie, as she was sick with worry over Roy. The argument wound down, and Roy told Sonny he had "the merchandise". Sonny left to make a phone call, and Carly started in on Roy. He told her he didn't want to get into it with her, but she explained that she just wanted to help, and then told Roy that he has no idea how much Bobbie loves him. She talked about how Bobbie's eyes lit up whenever Roy was mentioned, and said that that was why she had to help her find the meeting. Roy tried to reassure her that Sonny had things under control, but Carly believed that Sonny would sacrifice Bobbie in a second to stay in power. She begged Roy to promise that Bobbie would be all right, and he agreed to do anything necessary to bring her home safely. Carly accepted this, then pointed out that "You're just a guy who unloads coffee", but Roy stood firm - "nobody hurts Bobbie, not Sorel, not Sonny; I'll do whatever it takes, no matter what I have to do". Sonny returned, told Carly he'd call in a couple hours, and he and Roy walked to the door. Carly quietly told Sonny to be careful, and he considered her remark for a moment, then agreed.

The following scenes were intercut: Carly fidgeting, too anxious to read; Bobbie and Sorel sitting in the car, waiting silently; Sonny and another man placing a suitcase on the wall; Carly getting her coat, but Johnny preventing her from leaving; Carly trying different tactics to talk Johnny into letting her leave, but Johnny refusing them all; Sorel bringing Bobbie to trade for the suitcase. Sorel decided he had to see for himself that the suitcase contained what Sonny said it did, but wanting no witnesses, ordered Bobbie thrust back into the backseat of the car. He was satisfied with the contents, but when Sonny demanded Bobbie in exchange, Sorel refused. He wanted to keep Bobbie to ensure Sonny's further cooperation, and when Sonny said it was a one time deal, told him that it was a shame - since he had no further use for Bobbie, he would have to dispose of her. Just then, while Bobbie sat in the back seat crying and worrying, a man rolled the front seat partition down. He inquired "Where to, ma'am?" and turned - it was Roy. As soon as Sorel hears the Limo driving away, he knows the 'jig is up'. Sonny taunts him, threatens him, and humiliates him a little bit.

Edward shows up at the penthouse, trying to get Carly back on his team. She's not buying, seems perfectly content at the PH. She even attempts to defend Sonny, up to a point. Sonny walks in on what looks like a tete a-tete; he's not thrilled. He orders the 'old man' out of the PH, tells him if he, Alan, AJ or Monica approach Carly again, AJ's going down. Carly calmly tells Edward she's with Sonny because she wants to be. After much blustering, Edward leaves. Bobbie comes in the penthouse, to be greeted with much enthusiasm and love by Carly. She and Bobbie talk, as Bobbie reassures her that she's fine; Sonny and Roy talk, telling each other 'thanks'. Bobbie apologizes to Sonny; he's still mad at Carly but accepts Bobbie's apology. Eventually, Bobbie and Roy leave for the brownstone. Carly tries to apologize to Sonny again; he blows up at her and tells her he'll never trust her again.

Sonny is leaving for a meeting and Carly asks where he’s going. Sonny tells Carly that she’s proved she can’t be trusted and leaves. Sonny comes home from his meeting, and Carly is waiting up. He tells her she should be in bed. She says “we need to talk.” She thought they were going to be able to find a way to co-habitate for the sake of the baby. She says she made “one tiny little mistake’, and he jumps in saying that’s exactly the problem…she doesn’t think it’s a big mistake. She tries to point out it’s nothing compared to what Hannah did. She wants a little credit for trying to do the right thing for her mother (opening the desk). He tells her she is worth nothing. Carly is insulted by Sonny’s statement that her love doesn’t mean anything. He says to her, love is desperation, not loyalty. She accuses him of being jealous of the people in her life like Bobbie and Michael. He accuses her of disrupting Michael’s life and says she uses love like a weapon to manipulate and hurt…and he’s not going to let her do that to him and make sure she never gets another chance. She’s cries. Carly tells Sonny she doesn’t need absolution from him. She tells him she’s worried he’ll shut their child out. She is stunned that he can’t offer anyone a second chance. She’s pretty brutal/honest telling him it’s no wonder he’s all alone when no one can live up to his standards. Sonny says she’s a manipulator and calculating. He saw her do it to Jason and he won’t let it happen to him. She says that their current situation (her words: armed camp) won’t work for the baby. She’s willing to try, is he? She is crying as she puts his hand on her stomach. His response: “That’s exactly what I mean.” He walks upstairs.

Mike dropped by lugging a present for Carly - a painted rocking chair with a huge bow. Sonny wasn't particularly enthusiastic, but when Mike worried that Carly wouldn't like it, replied "Hey, it's new, it's furniture, she'll love it". Sonny filled Mike in on Carly's latest misdeed- letting Bobbie into the desk - and they talked about trust and betrayal. Mike suggested that Sonny might be overreacting just a tad, pointing out that "there's a world of difference between letting her mother into a desk and selling you out to the FBI" but Sonny wasn't buying. They left, Sonny to a meeting. Meanwhile, Elizabeth arrived at the penthouse. Johnny told her Sonny would be out for a bit, but invited her to wait inside, and she agreed. Upon seeing the rocker, Elizabeth remarked that it was "so not Sonny".

Carly went to an antique store where she purchased a lovely antique desk for Sonny. The dealer told her that there is only one key, and that it cannot be duplicated. She was pleased and arranged to have it delivered that afternoon. She returned to the penthouse where she found Elizabeth sitting in the gift rocking chair, waiting for Sonny. Carly ordered Elizabeth to leave, but she refused, and they argued about Carly using the baby to get to Sonny and about Jason's departure. Carly accused Elizabeth of wanting Sonny for herself, and when Elizabeth countered that Carly could at least have waited for Jason to leave before sleeping with his best friend, Carly slapped her. Sonny walked in the door just in time to see this, and apologized to Elizabeth for the unpleasantness. He told Carly she was not to raise her voice to Elizabeth and to treat her with respect; when Carly asked when the mother of his child would be treated with respect, he replied that she would get it when she earned it. Sonny escorted Elizabeth to the elevator, and they agreed that Francis' services were no longer needed. When he returned, Carly was sitting in the chair. She told him how much she liked it and appreciated it, thinking it was from him, but he told her to send Mike a thank-you note. She clarified - it's not from you? Sonny nastily replied "Why would I buy you anything?" They were arguing about Elizabeth when there was a knock at the door - the desk had arrived. Sonny was puzzled, but Carly told him it has a key and locks, so he needn't worry about trusting her anymore. Later, he rudely wants to know why that piece of junk is still there (meaning the desk). She tells him she will have it moved into the den. He says no that when he looks at it he will be reminded that he can't trust her. She sweetly tells him she can't send it back as it is a peace offering. Sonny is very sarcastic and negative. Carly remains pleasant, beseeching him to forgive her. She promises him she will not violate his trust again and assures him she has learned her lesson. Its obvious she wants to make up with him. He tells her he is off to meet with a coffee buyer and this meeting is important as he was arrested during their last one. Carly insists that she should go with Sonny to help smooth things over and help establish Sonny as the stable family man. He reluctantly agrees. She succeeds in charming Sonny's guest, even making Sonny laugh with her stories, his anger towards her seeming to have disappeared. AJ seethes as he watches them laugh over dinner. AJ’s anger reached its limit and he lashed out at the bartender, who tried to cut him off per “Mr. Ashton’s standing order.”

After the coffee merchant left, AJ grabbed the bottle from the bartender and headed toward Carly and Sonny’s table just as they had decided to go home. AJ swung the bottle at Sonny, and in the melee, Carly ended up thrown to the ground. Sonny terrified for her and the baby, tells her to lay still. When AJ apologizes, Sonny lunges at AJ choking him. Carly manages to talk Sonny into letting AJ go. Taggert arrives, and AJ demands to press charges. Taggert suggests AJ doesn't go there since he could be charge with assault since he went after Sonny with a bottle, knocking over a pregnant woman in the process. Sonny & Carly leave and return to the penthouse. Sonny tries to tell her that she can't come between him and anyone that comes after him, but Carly sees this as just another effort to control her and stalks upstairs. Sonny pours himself some water and starts remembering the last time that he saw Lily alive, and then he flashes back and forth between Lily and Carly, both smiling at him. At that moment, Baby Michael runs into the room with Carly right behind him, who apologizes to Sonny, but Sonny is fine with it. Michael gives Sonny a kiss and melts his heart.

Later in the night, Sonny cries out "Don't go. Lily, NO!" Carly comes in, wakes him up. He grabs onto her, sobbing in his grief over the memories of Lily's and the baby's death. Carly holds and comforts him. He tells Carly to return to bed, instead she moves closer to him on his bed. Carly comforts Sonny after his nightmare. She asks him if it was about Lily & tells him she heard him call out for Lily right before he woke up, he tells her he tries to stop her in the dream, then the car explodes, and that he felt helpless. Carly assured him that she wouldn't do anything else that would put her or the baby in danger, and that AJ didn't hurt either of them and that there was nothing to worry about. She puts his hand to her tummy to let him feel where the baby is, but he couldn't, so she laid down and he was able to feel the baby, he blushed and thanked her for doing that, then she went back to her bedroom.

Carly gets permission from Sonny to use the kitchen, and then offers to make him breakfast. When we return to them, Sonny’s eating the eggs. He doesn’t look like they taste very good, but she manages to get a “thank you” out of him. She’s gotten a letter from the hospital inviting her to take a Lamaze class, and asks Sonny if he would be interested. She tells him that she had a C-section for Michael. They share a cute talk where neither one of them really want to admit that they both want to do it…but they decide not to (for now). Roy comes in, and Carly says she will go shopping. He tries to send a guard and she is not too pleased. She manages to get away without one.

Carly arrives at the brownstone and overhears Bobbie and Hannah talking about Roy being an FBI agent and that he is Hannah's father. Meanwhile, Sonny asks Roy to go to Puerto Rico for him. Roy declines. Sonny is explaining that he wants Roy as a representative, not a foot soldier. Roy says that he wants to clear a few things up. He reminds Sonny that he used to work for Frank Smith and that he turned state’s evidence. Sonny understands that Frank fostered no loyalty and that Roy did what he had to do. Roy goes on to say that he continued to inform on people for the FBI because he had no choice. As Roy’s story continues, he ends with, “I’m still an informant for the FBI and my current assignment is you.” Sonny is pacing and looking shell shocked. He says, “You’re working for the Feds, are you wearing a wire?” Roy offers to let him search him. Sonny says he must be a great snitch, he almost fell for it. He asks Roy why fess up. Roy responds that Sonny helped save Bobbie. He wants his life back. The people he snitched on before were scum, and he had a job to do to buy his freedom back. Until they assigned him back to PC, and he remembered what being a real person was like. He doesn’t want to make any more compromises. Sonny figured they sent him because of Luke. Roy confirms that and that Luke doesn’t know why Roy is back. Carly comes running in and tells Sonny to stop talking to Roy. Roy is an FBI agent and Hannah’s father and “They are setting you up.” Carly tries to continue the story about what she overheard, but Sonny says Roy has already come clean, except for the Hannah part. He doesn’t seem angry, just intense. He tells her to calm down if she wants to stay and listen to what Roy has to say. Roy says Hannah is his daughter and he was about to tell Sonny that part. Carly jumps in accusingly, but Sonny stops her. Roy goes on to say when Hannah couldn’t get the job done, they brought him in because of his prior relationship with Luke. Sonny asks him what he has already given the FBI. He says nothing except what happened with the harbor master. Sonny says he can’t have Roy around the warehouse or the organization, and he’ll have to tell his men that Roy is an informant. He sounds worried as he asks Roy what is going to happen to him next. Roy thinks he’ll probably have to go back to prison once the FBI realizes his cover has been blown. Sonny wishes him luck. Roy says one last thing: Hannah never betrayed the truth. Roy leaves. Carly is shocked that he let Roy go, and seems really worried. Sonny tells her Roy didn’t have access to any information and sounds impressed that Roy “threw his life away to tell the truth. I owe him for that.”

Next, Sonny is making her drink some water and telling her to put her feet up. He tries to tease her that she’s running around too much and she should have taken the guard and the car. They really seem to understand each other. He’s grateful she tried to help, but he says it’s like what happened at the grill with AJ. What if Roy had been armed? Why did she jump in the middle? She says she doesn’t want him to go to prison. He comments that she’d get sole custody that way. They decide to take Michael to the park.

Roy is at the docks when Sonny arrives. Roy asks if they have unfinished business. Sonny says they do and hands Roy an envelope. The envelope contains a check and cash. Roy asks what it is and Sonny tells him severance pay. Sonny tells Roy that he is going to tell his men that Roy is an informant. Sonny warns him that once that happens, his cover will be blown and suggests that Roy should take the money and run. Roy says he is tired of running and he won't do it anymore. He tells that he told him who he was in return for Sonny saving Bobbie. They both appreciate what they did for each other. Roy keeps the check and gives back the cash. Sonny tells Roy to watch his back and Roy tell him to do the same. They say goodbye.

Bobbie is at the brownstone when Carly arrives, furious that her mother has put Sonny in danger of being arrested. She tells her mother that Roy is setting her up. Bobbie tells Carly that all of this whole nonsense began with her and that it is Carly's fault. Carly is livid and tells her mother she can't believe what she is hearing. She tells her daughter that if Roy goes back to prison she will never forgive her. Carly reminds her mother that Roy has been lying to her since he hit town. Bobbie tells her daughter that she loves Roy and Roy loves her. They were just starting to work things out when Carly came bursting into Sonny's to tell him what Roy was already doing. Carly tells her mother that Roy is using her and that it is not love. Bobbie asks Carly to please try to convince Sonny to help Roy stay out of prison. She tells Carly maybe Sonny could feed Roy false information to keep the feds off his back until they can come up with something better. Carly reminds her mother that after the desk incident she doesn't want to risk alienating Sonny again. Bobbie angrily tells Carly she owes her for helping Jason when he was shot. Carly shoots back that Roy is no Jason. Bobbie tells Carly to leave and she does.

Sonny is on the docks after he has left Roy and bumps into Rae. She asks him for help in directions to the Corinthos/Morgan warehouse. She says she only wants to ask Mr. Corinthos one question and will be out of his way. She doesn't want to hear anything about Sonny being a plague to Port Charles or a hoodlum. She has heard it all. Sonny smiles and confesses he is the plague. Rae is embarrassed and charmed by Sonny. She explains about the desk and Sonny tells her he doesn't have it anymore. He tells her he donated it to charity the day before. He is sorry and she says she is too for calling him those names. No problem.

Sonny arrives home to find Carly reading to Michael on the couch. He joins them and picks Michael up to show him the view Jason used to show him from the penthouse and tells him that he owns half of the coffee house, thanks to Jason. Carly reminds Sonny it is Michael's bedtime. When Carly tries to take him from Sonny he tells her he will put him down and they all go upstairs, one little family in the making. After they have put Michael to bed, Carly marvels at how at home Michael feels and how easily he went to sleep for Sonny. Sonny explains it is a guy thing and they laugh. As they are picking up toys together Carly tells Sonny her ultrasound is coming up and she would like him to go. He says great that he just needs to know when so he can plan around. When Carly asks around what? Sonny replies that he has spoken to a priest and they will be getting married next week. Carly looks shocked. Carly and Sonny debated the marriage issue. She at first laughed about the idea, suggesting that Sonny was having a psychotic episode, and he went along with the humor for a while, but it became clear that he wasn't joking about the marriage. He insisted, and they began to argue, with Carly pointing out that when he doesn't get his way, he becomes nasty, and he responded by doing exactly that. Carly explained that she didn't want to marry another man she doesn't love; she admitted to "having issues", but felt that inside she is someone worth loving and wants to wait for someone who sees that. Sonny guessed that she is holding out for Jason, but she said that Jason only proves that she is capable of being in a loving relationship. Sonny insisted that he is just trying to do the right thing and she must accept that Jason will not be back, but Carly replied that she knows what love is now and can't settle for less than the real thing. She ended the discussion by promising that she wouldn't change her mind, and went upstairs.

Carly returned from shopping to find Michael playing cheerfully with Sonny, and took the opportunity to point out that they could be a happy family without marriage. Sonny took Michael upstairs, and Johnny announced Father Coates. Carly greeted him with some confusion, assuming that he was there to hear Sonny's confession. Sonny came down, and cleared up the misunderstanding: the priest was there for premarital counseling. Sonny explained that they were going to be married in a church, and that later the baby would be baptized. Carly said that she didn't agree, but Sonny quietly insisted that she would, explaining to Father Coates that Carly was just suffering pre-wedding jitters. The priest understood, gave Sonny a paper with questions for the happy couple to consider, and left. Carly took the paper and tore it up, calling Sonny arrogant and presumptuous. Sonny explained that they must do what's right regardless of their individual wishes, that the children need a proper family and home. Carly angrily stated that she would never marry Sonny, threatened to take the children and leave, and stormed out of the room, leaving Sonny with a bemused smile. Sonny told Carly he had spoken to Father Coates and that he'd told the priest there would be no wedding that week. Carly told him that was good because the idea of them as husband and wife was pretty scary. Sonny told her to let him know when she was ready and he'd book the church. She adamantly told him she would never marry him and that he needed to understand that. A fight ensued and Carly warned both Sonny and Johnny not to mess with her. Sonny looked at Johnny and quipped, "Hormones."

Carly rushed into Kelly's telling Bobbie she wasn't going to believe what Sonny was pulling this time. Bobbie abruptly told her, "Not now." Carly continued telling her about how Sonny was an absolute caveman, "I'm surprised he isn't dragging me around by my hair!". She tells Bobbie that she and Michael are moving into the Brownstone that day. Bobbie told her there was no way she was moving in, she had her own problems with Roy. She blasted Carly for being responsible for sending Roy back to Pentonville by telling Sonny about him. She told Carly that she was tired of her using Michael to get what she wanted and that they had everything they needed with Sonny. Go Home.

After Bobbie left, Rae commented to Carly that it didn't seem that went very well. Carly, for unknown reasons, began to confide her situation to Rae. Rae assured her that a mother never forgets the child she left behind and that this too would pass. Carly excused herself after saying that she hoped they'd run into one another again.

Mike came to Sonny's and Sonny told him to congratulate him, he's getting married. Mike asked who he would be married, and he answered, "Carly, of course." Mike scoffed "The same Carly you don't trust?". Sonny admitted that Carly wasn't into it, but assured his dad she would be. He said Carly just had….issues, but was going to marry him, like it or not. Mike suggested that Sonny try an alternate route…take Carly out to dinner and give her a nice ring. Sonny said he didn't have the stomach for it. Bobbie was announced by Johnny and came in. Mike excused himself and Sonny informed Bobbie that Mike wasn't "100% on the idea of him marrying Carly." Bobbie told him that she wasn't going to let Carly move into the Brownstone and that they had to work this out themselves. She told him that Roy was back in prison and insisted that Sonny help him. Sonny said he didn't really know what he could do and Bobbie abruptly told him that wasn't good enough. She pushed him further, with him continuously telling her he didn't know what he could do. Roy had had a deal with the Feds and, for better or worse, he had blown it. He promised he'd do what he could, he just didn't know what that would be. After she left, he called Benny and told him to send someone to Pentonville to keep an eye on Roy and make sure he's safe.

Carly returned to the penthouse and told Sonny either he calls off the marriage or she's gone. He asked her where she thought she'd go and she bluffed "the Brownstone," saying Bobbie wanted her and Michael to move in there. Sonny laughingly called her a liar and told her Bobbie had been there earlier and he knew Bobbie wanted no part of it. Incensed, Carly ordered Leticia to pack Michael, they were moving. Sonny asked Leticia who paid her salary and she responded that he did. He told her to take the day off and say hi to Reginald for him. She happily thanked him and skipped away, much to Carly's chagrin. She came downstairs later with Michael and bags in tow. Sonny asked if he even got a good-bye kiss and she said, "in your dreams." He laughed and said no, he meant Michael. He kissed Michael good-bye and said he'd see him real soon. He told Carly to let him know where she ended up. As she struggled with Michael and the bags, she called for Johnny to help her, but Sonny smiled and said he was on a break. Carly called him a jerk. She told Michael not to worry, being homeless was not so bad. Carly waits at the elevator for Sonny to stop her from leaving, when he doesn't she huffs as she gets in the elevator thinking he has called her bluff. As the elevator doors closed, Sonny comes into the hallway calling after her...too late she doesn't hear him. Sonny arranged to have Benny and Francis tail Carly to make sure she didn't get into trouble, but cautioned them not to let her see them. Meanwhile, Carly and Michael sat on a bench as she considered their next move. Reginald and Leticia came by and Carly tried to get them to watch Michael for her so she could make some phone calls, but they refused. They each tried to persuade her to move back to the Quartermaine’s and the penthouse respectively, but she wouldn't consider it, insisting that no one was going to tell her what to do. Leticia was concerned that Michael was having pretzels for dinner, but Carly, after telling Reginald that she'd rather sleep under the pier than go back to the Q's, chased them away.

She turned up next at Kelly's, where Tammy gave her a hard time about all Michael's gear. Carly tried to get Tammy to watch Michael for a minute (Tammy refused) and tried to get a room (none available). Carly and Tammy began to argue about where they might stay, and Carly started her rant about Sonny just as Emily and Juan came in. Emily made a nasty crack about Carly and then tried to talk to Michael about how nice it was back at the Quartermaine house. Emily, who wanted very much to take Michael home with her, began a heated argument with Carly as Juan distracted Michael. Carly insisted that she and Michael were perfectly happy at Sonny's despite Emily's insistence that she'd heard Carly trying to rent a room. Juan eventually hustled Emily out and Carly gathered the stroller and Michael and left the diner. They arrived back at Sonny's as he was on the phone with Benny once again, getting the update on her whereabouts. Sonny welcomed them home with open arms, and inquired about their little adventure. Carly took Michael up for his nap, and came back downstairs as Sonny prepared to leave. She cautioned him that it was a cold, cruel world out there, but all Sonny did was ask if she'd had a bad day. Carly asked him if it didn't bother him that she wouldn't be there if there were anywhere else she could have gone, but he just answered "no" and chuckled a bit. Carly reminded him that she had no intention of marrying him or anyone else just for convenience, and much to her surprise and confusion, Sonny agreed: if she felt that strongly, the wedding was off. He then offered her a deal - no priests, no lawyers - he would stop pushing her to marry him if she would just consider the idea. He pointed out that Mrs. Corinthos would never have the kind of bad day that Miss Benson had just had, and that people would show her respect. Carly agreed to think about it, and they shook hands on the deal, then Sonny threw her the keys to the "castle" and left, joking that it "beats a single at Kelly's".

While Michael and Carly were playing in the park, AJ came up and demanded to see Michael. He pleaded with Carly to let him see Michael and she reminded him of all the times she tried to get him to give her a divorce and work out a custody arrangement. She told him he was a drunk and wasn’t getting anywhere near her son. Johnny manhandled him out of the way and Carly and Michael left.

Bobby went to see Sonny and told him Larkin was dirty. She begged him to help Roy and he said he couldn’t go see him or Larkin would know Sonny was onto him. Bobbie complimented Sonny for having thrown Larkin through a window. Sonny then alluded that he had indeed bribed Ford and told Bobbie to stay out of it. He told Bobbie to thank Roy for letting him know that Larkin was out to get him and promised he would help Roy from the outside all he could. He told Bobbie she was a fool to visit Roy in Pentonville because Larkin would see she was the connection between Sonny and Roy. Bobbie said she was seeing Roy as soon as she left Sonny. Carly and Michael came in just then and Bobbie left, saying a hurried good-bye. After she badgered him, Sonny filled Carly in on the details of his conversation with Bobbie. Sonny reminded Carly not to deal with AJ and Carly admonished Johnny for ratting her out, calling him a punk. He threatened to call the DA and send AJ to jail that night just to get rid of him. Carly said that if Sonny sent AJ down the river…then Sonny started laughing at her for saying, “Down the river” asking her “Where is the river, Carly?” and telling her she’d been watching too many movies. They laughed together and she asked if he was making fun of her and he said, yeah, he was a little. She reminded him that sending AJ up the river would hurt Lila and Sonny said he didn’t want to do that. He reminded her that he would do anything, ANYTHING to keep her safe. She smiled and said she was finally starting to get that. Carly reminded Sonny about how helpful she was at his business dinner. She pointed out that the coffee business is half Michael's, and since he isn't of age, his half should be monitored by her, thus making Sonny and Carly equal partners. Carly offered to help Sonny with the business, but he refused, saying that maybe she should start her own business instead. Again she tried to get him to agree to let her help, but Sonny refused to discuss it.

Carly was on her way out the door to go shopping when Mike dropped by. She thanked him for his gift of the rocker, then noticed he had another present with him. Mike told her it was for Sonny, for his birthday. Carly was surprised, and after a bit more chat, she left. Sonny came in and he and Mike made small talk about Carly, then Mike gave him his gift. Sonny stood silently, then took the gift, but Mike had to pressure him into opening it. It was a frame for was a baby picture, and Mike was pleased to give it to Sonny, but Sonny was obviously unhappy. Mike guessed that it was because of all the birthdays he missed when Sonny was a child. He asked if Sonny was ever going to get past that. Mike said he planned to be a better grandfather than he was a father, and Sonny agreed that Mike would be allowed to love the children but that Sonny would never allow them to be hurt by him. They parted somewhat awkwardly, and Sonny picked up the frame and shoved it in the desk drawer.

When Carly returned, she said she had a surprise for Sonny, that she wanted to try to make up for the fight they'd had before about the business. They picked that argument up where they'd left off, but not seriously, and this time Carly asked if Sonny had been serious about setting her up in her own business. Sonny smiled and asked to see his surprise, and she showed him a tiny outfit for the baby to wear home from the hospital. Sonny couldn't believe that the baby would be so small, and they made friendly small talk about whether it would be a boy or a girl and the relative importance of dimples. Sonny suddenly turned serious, and admitted that while he regrets having hurt Jason, he thinks the baby is the best thing that ever happened to him. Carly added that it doesn't matter how the child was conceived, the only thing that matters is that they love it. Sonny got choked up and left quickly to go to the warehouse. Later, when he returned, Carly informed him that she wanted to be taken out to dinner, and when Sonny went to check on Michael, she made secret phone arrangements for a birthday surprise.

Carly is all dressed up and making final phone arrangements with the Grill for Sonny's birthday. They both compliment each other about how good they look. Carly reminds Sonny that “Carlybabes” likes to go out and paint the town. Sonny wonders aloud where her knee high boots are. He likes those. She seductively offers that maybe she can wear them again sometime. As they are walking out the door, Sonny says he would like to go to The No-Name. Carly insists on the Grill. He agrees and they are out the door.

Alexis and Ned run in to Sonny and Carly at the Grille. Alexis tells Sonny she needs to speak to him. Carly and Ned exchange looks. She wants to know what he is looking at. Ned replies, "A human wrecking ball." He thinks AJ deserves whatever he gets, but not his grandmother. Has Carly made arrangements for Lila to see Michael? Yes? Good, Ned replies. Ned excuses himself to get Alexis's car and Carly goes to the table. Alexis fills Sonny in on the call she received from Bobbie. Sonny says to give her time and he will pick up the bill. Alexis says she doesn't care about the bill she just wanted him to know what was going on. He thanks her. Carly is whispering with the waiter about the surprise. Carly wants to know what Alexis wanted. Sonny tells her that it is his business and he isn't going to tell her. He also tells her that there is a likeable quality about her once you get to know her. Just then the waiters come out with a cake and begin singing Happy Birthday. Sonny looks like a ghost. He is in a different world. He is flashing back and seeing Deke stomping on his birthday cake. He is not well. Carly looks scared. Sonny tries to collect himself. He says it is time to go and Carly agrees. Just as they are walking in Edward, Lila, Monica and Alan arrive. Edward comments that he wasn't aware that Carly was throwing birthday parties now. Alan asks Sonny how it feels to have stolen another man's child. Sonny tells Alan he isn't in the mood. Alan gets in Sonny's face and says he would love to give a piece of garbage like Sonny a piece of his mind and an all out argument ensues. All the Q's gang up on Sonny, with Alan threatening to "give him what he deserves". Sonny flashes back to Deke saying those very words obviously bringing back memories of physical abuse. Carly intune to Sonny's distress, came to his defense, although she apologized to Lila for the unpleasantness. Monica calling Sonny "Carly's latest sperm donor", then went on to blast Carly for having trotted four "Daddy"s through Michael's young life (Tony, Jason, AJ and now Sonny) and called her a slut, which was more than Sonny could tolerate. He insisted that Monica extend an apology to Carly, and when Monica refused, threatened to send AJ to prison for the arson immediately. Monica backed down and apologized, and Sonny warned Edward to keep his family in line. Sonny reminded them that Carly is the mother of their grandson or great grandson, and she deserves to be treated with respect, a sentiment Lila applauded.

Sonny and Carly arrived back at the penthouse. Carly was expecting a scolding for speaking out of turn, causing the nasty birthday surprise, and getting into a scene with the Quartermaines, but Sonny surprised her by thanking her for standing up for him. Carly said that the look on his face when Alan was yelling at him was the same as when they got stuck in the elevator on New Year's Eve, and Sonny explained that birthdays and elevators have a lot in common for him. He explained that if they were going to be a family they would have to be open with one another. He recounted his eighth birthday, when his Deke (his step-father and Taggert's mentor) got jealous of the attention Sonny's mother was paying to the birthday, threw the cake on the floor and beat Sonny with a belt buckle after hitting his mother. Deke had said "It's time you got what you deserve" - the exact words Alan had uttered that evening. Sonny tells her when Alan spoke all Sonny heard was Deke. He thanks her for stepping in when she did as if she hadn't he would have put Alan in the hospital and he would be in jail right now. Carly thanked him for trusting her with the personal information. She offered to do without birthday celebrations, even for the kids, if it would be easier for Sonny, but he said that he wanted big celebrations for the children, with balloons and cake and everything he never had. They joked about his lack of baking skills (he insisted he can bake a cake, he just chooses not to) and were going upstairs to check on Michael when an envelope fell from her pocket. Carly tried to hide it, but he insisted on seeing it - a birthday present from "someone with no money". It was a gift certificate good for winning one argument with Carly Benson, and they joked about it and went upstairs on a pleasant note.

Carly fussed to Sonny about the drapes in the penthouse and suggested karma beads, which started them laughing. She asked him about the nursery décor and he told her whatever she wanted was fine. She smiled and said she wanted him to rent a ballroom and get together all the people who had been mean to her ever and make them apologize. As she leaned back onto the couch, she doubled over in pain. Sonny immediately picked her up and they headed for the hospital in a panic. When they arrived, Sonny tried to reassure Carly, but was extremely distressed as they took her away for tests.

Monica began hassling Sonny at the nurse's desk, but she backed down when he told her Carly might be losing the baby. Carly emerged in tears and it took her a few minutes to tell Sonny that the baby was fine, but they had to wait on some tests. Dr Meadows approached them and told them that there were no major problems with the baby. Sonny immediately asked about the minor ones, and she assured him that Carly just needed more potassium. Sonny asked if she should stay in bed and Dr. Meadows laughed and suggested he not go overboard. Carly said he was already there. Carly smiled and said that she felt like dancing. Sonny said she could dance as soon as the baby was born.

Back at home, Carly informed Sonny of what on the list she would eat and what she would not. He told her she'd eat it all and like it. He sat on the couch beside her to work because he said he couldn't see her from his desk. They laughed when she asked if she was under twenty-four hour watch and he replied, "You got a problem with that?" Sonny fixed Carly a healthy meal (egg white/spinach omelet). She promptly tried to bribe Johnny to go get her some donuts, but Sonny made a new rule: Johnny was to make NO donut runs for Carly, no matter what. She pretended to resent Sonny's hovering over her, but secretly smiled, and sent Sonny on a series of little jobs - get her newspaper, fetch an apple for her, maybe a nice glass of freshly squeezed OJ. Sonny caught on, but it was all right.

Across the hallway, Emily and Juan crept into Jason's apartment to "be alone". They began to kiss passionately and he was beginning to remove her clothing when Sonny and Carly came strolling in. Emily scrambled to get her shirt back on as Carly demanded to know what they were doing there. Juan replied "Nothing, just hanging out" and Carly snidely answered "Oh, is that what they're calling it these days?" Emily tried to tell them that she had Jason's permission to use his apartment any time, but Sonny and Carly both answered that that wasn't what Jason had in mind. Emily replied that she was sure Jason would be happy that she had someone who cared about her, then tried to leave with Juan, but Sonny stopped them and hustled Carly into the hallway for a conference. Sonny insisted that they had to split them up - Carly at first misinterpreted, thinking he wanted to break them up, but he explained that he just wanted to talk to Juan while Carly spoke to Emily. "Your not seriously suggesting I have the big sex talk with Emily?" He retorts, "Who knows more about sex than you do?" Carly reluctantly agreed, and they went back in. Juan went with Sonny across the hall while Carly stayed with Emily and tried to have the "big talk" with her. Emily was smart-mouthed and obnoxious, but Carly persisted and they almost had a genuine moment when Carly admitted making mistakes, hoping Emily could learn from them. Emily admitted not being sure that she was ready, but worried that Juan was more than ready, and Carly suggested that if Juan were the right one, he'd wait. She told Emily that the most important thing in a relationship was trust and Emily quickly reverted to nastiness, pointing out that Jason had trusted Carly and she'd betrayed him with Sonny. Carly had enough, and told Emily that she could just learn the lessons herself, and left Emily sitting on the sofa, looking smug. Across the hall, Sonny had better luck with Juan, counseling him that passion is all well and good, but that if you're not careful the consequences can be more than you'd bargained for, and stressed safe sex. Sonny finished his lecture, and Juan escaped with Emily. Carly cracked "Don't bother to thank me or anything, you little brat", as they left, and then admitted to Sonny that the talk had been less than successful. She said she'd never been much good at the sex-with-love thing, and Sonny suggested maybe she'd designed it that way, afraid, and running away her whole life. Carly agreed to his assessment, and said that she'd often thought of what it would be like to stop running and trust someone.

Carly and Sonny shared several close moments and the passion between them started to grow. Carly confided in him that she loved the mornings, with the two of them reading quietly, allowing one another time to gently wake up.  He told her he loved coming home and hearing her and Michael playing together. He said that it made the house feel full. He asked her if she'd like to go out, just the two if them. She hurriedly agreed and returned in a dazzling evening dress. Sonny voiced his admiration just as Bobbie burst in and demanded that Sonny do something about Roy's situation. She railed into him until Carly told her to back off and show Sonny some respect. Bobbie left and Sonny told Carly it surprised him that she defended him, first to Alan and then to her mother. He said that Jason had always said that she was great in a crunch. She said Jason had always said Sonny was a stand up guy. She tells him she didn't believe Jason then, but she does know. Slowly, they came together for a tentative, then tender and gentle kiss. Their kisses turned passionate, and after inquiring about the health of the "no name" and being reassured by Carly, Sonny led her to his bedroom. It was a little awkward at first, and Carly was scared and hesitant, but eventually they did make love. Afterward, the phone rang and Sonny explained that he had to leave. After he'd gone, Carly got up and went to the dresser where she toyed thoughtfully with her rings and his. Later, Leticia brought Michael in for his bedtime story (very cute, the two of them on the bed with Michael chortling over the "lions" in the dinosaur book).

Sonny arrived at the safe house and offered Roy $500,000 and transportation out of the country, but Roy declined, explaining that he "had ties in Port Charles". Sonny warned that he can't protect Roy and that Larkin won't back off, and Roy suggested that they team up to go after Larkin. He explained his reasoning: if he can prove that Larkin is dirty, the FBI will have to retry all his cases, which is expensive, lets a lot of criminals out of prison, and makes the FBI look bad. Therefore the FBI might be willing to let Roy go for time served and back off Sonny in exchange for not having Larkin thrown in their faces. Roy admitted that he had no hard evidence against Larkin, and they agreed to go after him together. Sonny decided that the first step would be to set up Larkin to falsify evidence against Sonny, and then Johnny brought Bobbie in. Bobbie and Roy kissed, then she thanked Sonny and apologized for blowing up at him earlier. She admitted then that she'd confronted Larkin and told him she knew he was crooked, and tried to justify this by saying she'd thought he'd killed Roy. Roy and Sonny convinced her that by doing this she'd brought Larkin down on herself, and warned her not to do anything to attract any further attention whatsoever. Sonny left. Sonny returned to the penthouse, and after some small talk he told Carly that Roy is all right and admitted that he'd told Bobbie. Carly thanked him, and said that if he hadn't changed his mind, maybe marrying wouldn't be the worst idea they'd ever had. Sonny clarified: "For the baby, right?" and Carly agreed, "Yeah, for the baby". She left the room, and Sonny smiled.

Sonny sneaked into the penthouse and hid something in the desk drawer as Carly came down the steps. She told him that Father Coates had called, and they talked about the decision to get married. She agreed to it as long as Sonny would promise to listen to her opinions and consider compromises. He agreed, as long as she stayed out of his business and understood that there would be no compromises where safety was concerned. They decided, after much discussion, on a July wedding date and Carly informed Sonny of her plan to take Michael to visit Lila. She left, and Emily showed up at the door. She apologized to Sonny for her behavior over Jason, then asked him for a favor - money for Juan. They talked about how Juan can’t know, since he wants to prove himself to Sonny, and Sonny agreed to speak to Ned about it.

At the Quartermaines’, Carly and Michael arrived to see Lila. Carly told her about how Sonny wants to be a family, and revealed the plan to marry just as AJ came in. He was horrified and began to argue with Carly, who called for Johnny to remove Michael. Carly apologized to Lila and suggested that from now on Lila visit Michael at the penthouse. AJ demanded to see Michael and he and Carly began to argue again, until Lila broke it up just as Monica entered. Monica thanked Carly for bringing Michael, and Carly fled the scene. Lila chastised AJ and insisted that in the future he be polite to her guests, then Monica scolded him for ruining Carly’s visit. Monica encouraged him to quit drinking, but he explained that he didn’t want to stop, that it allows him not to care so much. He and Monica exchanged “I love you’s as he remembered it was her birthday, and she invited him to the celebration.

At L&B, Ned was on the phone arguing about practice dates when Sonny arrived with Emily. Ned said that Juan had potential, but that that was no guarantee of success, and Sonny said that he would like to provide the resources to give Juan his chance. Ned at first refused because he didn’t want to get involved with Sonny, but he eventually agreed providing Sonny promised to stay completely uninvolved. Sonny got a phone call and agreed to meet someone, then left after agreeing to Ned’s terms.

At the coffee warehouse, Sonny arrived to find Benny with Larkin and two other men. Benny informed Sonny that Larkin wanted to search the warehouse, and Larkin produced a warrant. Sonny directed Benny to take the other agents to the office to start searching, then Larkin pretended to find a package of heroin in one of the coffee bags. Larkin said that Sonny must start cooperating, but Sonny appeared unfazed until Carly showed up with Johnny and Michael. Carly sized up the situation, demanding, “What’s Fred the Fed doing here”? Carly was really upset to find Larkin hassling Sonny at the warehouse. Larkin taunted her about Sonny going to prison and Sonny told Carly to leave. Carly refused and Sonny told Johnny to get her and Michael out of there, which he did most efficiently. Larkin promised Sonny that the drugs he'd planted in the coffee were more than sufficient to get him to prison unless he produced Roy. Sonny called his bluff and told him that he didn't know where Roy was and that he doubted the federal agents in his office were willing to perjure themselves for Larkin. Larkin assured him that he would go to prison unless he delivered Roy. Sonny offered Larkin $500,000 to back off and Larkin blew him off, saying he had 24 hours to deliver Roy or it was prison.

At the penthouse, Carly was insisting that Johnny go out and find Sonny when the man himself appeared and told Carly to back off. He insisted that his business was none of hers, but she maintained that he is the father of her baby and what affects him, affects him. She pointed out that if anything happened to him, she, Michael and the baby would both be in the streets. She told him how AJ had threatened that if Sonny went to jail, he'd have Michael in a heartbeat. Sonny told her that would never happen and that when he asked her to marry him, he meant that he would take care of her and be a good father to Michael and the new baby, that they would be a real family. He told her, smiling sheepishly and looking deliciously boyish, that he had this - and the extracted a big, gorgeous diamond engagement ring - to give to her as a symbol of his promise to always keep her safe and never leave her. Carly and Sonny discussed the ring Sonny bought for her. Carly tried to explain why she wasn't ready to take off Jason's rings. Sonny told her that Jason's never coming back; Carly looked quite sad when she heard this. Sonny said he didn't mind being married to someone who's in love with another man. Carly took his ring and told him the day will come when she's ready to move on and wear his ring instead of Jason's.

Luke headed over to the penthouse to confront Sonny about Roy's arrest. About two minutes into Luke's diatribe against Sonny, Carly appeared to defend Sonny. Carly orders Luke out of "our house". Luke immediately picks up on that and wonders if Sonny has completely lost his mind if he is shacked up with his niece. As Carly keeps yelling at Luke to leave, Sonny refuses to respond to Luke's accusations that he hung Roy out to dry, set Roy up, or otherwise led Roy to having a target on his back. When Carly speaks up again, Luke calls her a slut! At which point Sonny finally speaks up, telling Luke to show her respect because she is carrying his child. Carly urges her uncle to congratulate her on her pregnancy. He questions whether Sonny is sure it is his. Sonny tells him not to go there, and then takes a phone call from Larkin who tells Sonny he has till the end of the week to turn over Roy. As Luke continues to accuse Sonny of wrong-doing regarding Roy, Carly finally blurts out that Roy is an FBI snitch. Luke doesn't believe her, and Sonny urges Carly to be quiet, he confirms Roy's involvement with the FBI, but refuses to involve Luke in what is going on with Larkin. Luke finally leaves, but not without warning Sonny that nothing had better happen to Roy or Bobbie, and not to turn his back on Carly.

Sonny has brought Carly over to the couch to calm down, and given her a mug of something to drink (she makes a yucky face when she finally finishes it). He then instructs her to stay upstairs next time Luke visits, she says "I'll try". As he tries to push the point, she responds that Luke has no right to talk to him that way. Sonny smiles & laughs at this, to which Carly responds "why are you always laughing at me?" He shakes it off that he is just getting used to her. He then says he should have thrown Luke out when he called her a slut. "Why? That used to be your favorite word for me" "I was wrong". Carly points out she has done some pretty awful things, to which Sonny agrees & starts to list some of them. That she has used Mikey to get what she wants & doing so tore Jason apart. He won't let her do that to him. Carly points out that he has quite a way with compliments. He continues that she has learned from her mistakes, and once she realized the error of marrying AJ, she tried to fix things; "you tried hard, sometimes stupid, but you tried hard". Carly again pushes him to admit he likes her and that the ring proves it. He says no, the ring is about respecting her; "no difference". She then sets her finished drink down, Sonny jumps up to wipe down the wood finish. Carly jumps up to stop him, saying "you drive me crazy with that!". He turns the tables on her by saying, "but you like it" Carly playfully tells him to shut up and pulls him into a kiss. (loved this scene, balance of serious & playful, and sexy). In a wordless scene, he leads her back to his room and twirls her around before pulling her back into a kiss, removes her robe, his shirt, more kisses. Then he twirls her onto the bed. Both are all smiles in between kisses.

At the safe house, Sonny asks Roy why he went to see Luke, when he told him to stay put. Sonny tells Roy that if he is not happy with their deal, he can leave anytime. Roy asks what Sonny has against Luke, but Sonny is vague. They agree to stick with the plan.

Carly goes to the hospital to see Bobbie and to take her to lunch as she has some news for her, but Bobbie thwarts her plans and insists on hearing the news now. She tells Bobbie that she said yes to Sonny and Bobbie asks what changed. Carly admits to liking some of Sonny's qualities and that she respects him and finds herself liking him more each day. Luke shows up and asks if they sent for the rescue team. He calls Carly the "little pink gift box that just keeps on giving", and she responds by telling him that Halloween is a ways off and he is acting like a bat out of hell then she leaves.

Sonny arrives at the hospital for their sonogram. He tells Carly that they are having a boy who he thinks will wave at them today. She asks why they bother with technology when they have "psychic" Sonny. She relays how Bobbie took the news of their marriage plans and he again promises to take care of her and the children and that he never breaks his promises. He points out that as soon as this mess is over, they can start looking forward. She tells him that she trusts him and then Audrey tells them that due to a cancellation, they can go in now.

Hannah and AJ are enjoying their dinner at the Grille when Carly shows up. They all exchange negative comments, including Carly calling Hannah the FBI whore. AJ asks the waiter to throw her out, but he says that he will check with the management. Carly reminds the waiter that her fiancé, Sonny Corinthos is on the board of ELQ.

On the dock, Roy and Sonny are met by Larkin and two other guys. Sonny tells Roy that it was either Roy or himself so he chose to give Roy over to Larkin. Larkin pulls out a gun and tells Sonny to use it on Roy to keep it quiet. Sonny says that that wasn't the deal and that he doesn't want to get suckered into a murder rap. Larkin tells him that it's either that or Sonny will be in prison along with Roy. Sonny asks Johnny for his gun, but Larkin insists on him using his gun. The two other guys frisk Roy to make sure that he's not wearing a vest. Roy starts sweating bullets and tells Larkin that he is making the biggest mistake of his life. Larkin tells Sonny to end it now. Sonny picks up the gun and faces Roy, who tells Larkin that he will see him in hell. Roy then tells Sonny that Luke was right about him being a lowlife, Sonny tells him that nobody's perfect, he aims and shoots.

AJ and Hannah continued to trade barbs with Carly, and she threw her impending marriage to Sonny in their faces. The argument began to heat up, with Hannah calling Carly a "heartless bitch", and Mike stepped in and broke things up before they got totally out of hand. After a few parting shots, Carly allowed Mike to escort her home. Arriving at the penthouse, she invited him in to see Michael, but since Michael was asleep Mike didn't stay long. Before he left, he warned her against looking for trouble and said that since she is pregnant her job is to walk away from fights, not incite them. Carly rose to the new argument, replying that Mike had ditched his son without bothering to see if the next guy was beating him up, and therefore was in no position to offer parental advice; he should deal with his own guilt rather than lay it on her. He replied that all that may be true, but Sonny isn't walking away and he needs her to be careful. Carly said she needed no favors from Mike, and he cataloged the ones he'd already done her with Jason. Carly replied that he'd better make more of an effort to get along with his future daughter-in-law or he'd never see his grandchild, and he in turn warned her that she'd better "be good" or she'd wish she'd never met his son.

Johnny took Bobbie to the safe house, and Sonny arrived, too. They were congratulating each other on their performances when Roy got there, joking about this "death" being much easier than the last one. Roy explained how he'd been able to stay under the water with his little portable oxygen tank. They rehashed their performances, and Roy admitted to being a little unnerved when he didn't see the gun switch. Sonny explained that he'd done it when they were searching Roy for the vest, and cautioned Bobbie to act grief-stricken for a while as Larkin is a little uncomfortable with her as a witness. He said he'd tell Johnny to pick Bobbie up in 1 hour, then left and Bobbie and Roy fell into each other's arms.

Sonny arrived at the penthouse to find Carly asleep on the sofa. He woke her, and then confided that Roy is fine and that Bobbie knows that. He asked why she wasn't in bed, and she admitted that she was worried about him. He said that she never needs to be, but she said that nonetheless it was good to have him home safe, and he hesitantly replied that it was good to come home to her. It was cute, and they ended with a kiss.

Sonny visited Roy at the hideout. Larkin called Sonny while he was there and told him that the terms of the deal had been changed and that now Sonny must give him 1 million dollars. Sonny pretended to be upset and then to give in. The final steps toward exposing Larkin are in motion. Next, Sonny comes upon Bobbie talking to Hannah and tried to explain to Bobbie that she cannot risk Roy's safety by talking to Hannah about him. He also told her about the wedding plans with Carly. Bobbie didn't take the news well. She launched into a "you'll never be happy if you don't marry for love" speech and told Sonny that Carly didn't marry AJ for love and look at the results. Sonny reminded Bobbie that he's not AJ.

A contemplative Sonny was in a baby store, amazed at all the products. He told the saleswoman he'd take a cradle he liked. She explained that each was handmade and would take a while to be made. He said that was fine. She said she could suggest some personalized carvings to be etched into the cradle.

Sonny and Roy met at the safe house. Sonny at first balked at wearing the recording device Roy offered him, explaining about the Brenda debacle, but eventually gave in. He later met with Larkin, gave him the $1M and got him to admit (on tape) that he'd demanded the money in return for leaving Sonny alone, that he'd want more money in six months and that he'd forced Sonny to shoot Roy.

Bobbie went to visit Carly at the penthouse. Carly pressured her mother to tell her what Roy was up to with Sonny, but Bobbie refused, saying that she'd have to take it up with Sonny herself. Carly pointed out that she'd allowed her mother access to the desk when she needed it, but Bobbie stood firm. Carly was upset, but she and her mother exchanged hugs and "I love you's” before Bobbie left. Sonny returned home to the penthouse where Carly was anxiously waiting. She explained that she was afraid for him, but he assured her that there was nothing to be afraid of, that he knew how to stay out of jail. She tried to bargain with him, saying that she'd wear his ring if he demonstrated good faith by telling her what he was up to with Roy, but he explained again that it was safer for her to not to know details of his business. That way, he said, if he were ever to be arrested, she could honestly deny knowing anything about it. She was reluctant to give up her "leverage" and wear the ring, but he convinced her that they were on the same side and reminded her that his ring was a symbol of his promise to take care of her and the children. She eventually relented and agreed to wear his ring and marry him. He took the ring and proposed, vowing to respect her, love the children and never leave, and then placed the ring on her finger as she repeated the vows.

Cute scene as Sonny, Carly and Michael play in the sandbox at the park. A drunk AJ saunters up "How touching, a gangster, a tramp and my son." Sonny prevents AJ from getting any closer to his family. He tells AJ that he is drunk and no child should see his father that way. Sonny tells him to stay away from Carly and Michael. They return home, Mike has come to visit. Sonny jokes that Mike never calls first as he knows Sonny will hide. Mike observes that things seem to be working out between Sonny and Carly. Edward calls Sonny to come over to the mansion to hear his latest proposition. Sonny is against Carly joining him but she points out that AJ no longer lives there and they have already run into him once that day so what are the chances of coming across him again? Besides she has pictures of Michael that she wants to show to Lila. After they arrive, Carly goes upstairs to visit with Lila. Lila asks Carly to reconsider letting AJ spend some time with Michael. Carly says she can't as long as he is drinking but if he gets sober and gets his act together then she would allow him to.

Downstairs while, Edward lobbied for Sonny's support against Jax's takeover of ELQ, a drunken AJ confronted Carly at the top of the stairs. Carly and AJ's exchange got more and more heated as they argue on the stairs. Carly flaunts Sonny's ring in his face announcing their engagement. AJ grabs Carly's arm, she pulls away from him, loses her balance, and falls backwards tumbling down the long staircase, finally coming to rest at the bottom unconscious and bleeding. Sonny heard Carly's screams as she fell and as he enters the foyer he is horrified to see her fall. Sonny and Edward rush over to her, and Sonny discovers that she's bleeding. He begins to panic, but Edward keeps him from picking her up bodily and possibly damaging the baby. Edward calls 911 while AJ takes a slug from his flask. The family drunk tries to explain that it was an accident, but Edward wants nothing to do with him; AJ lingers in the background while Sonny kneels helplessly over Carly, and Edward tries to stay calm. The ambulance arrives, and Carly is taken to GH with Sonny riding along. Once Sonny leaves, Edward lashes out at AJ, telling him that if Carly and the baby are killed, he hopes that AJ will be convicted of murder. AJ reiterates the accidental nature of the fall, but Edward won't be put off. Alan and Monica choose that moment to rush in the door worried by the ambulance they passed on their way in, and when they hear what happened they are just as flabbergasted at Edward. A few more choice comments in AJ's direction and he leaves, still clutching his precious flask.

Carly is wheeled into the emergency room at General Hospital, still unconscious. Sonny follows the gurney helplessly--but he leaves obediently when Tony tells him that they need room to work. Sonny watches as the doctors work, his fear and worry just barely kept under control. Soon, Tony comes out to tell him what's going on: the placenta has detached from Carly's uterus, and they need to stop the bleeding. The baby is still fine, but if the bleeding doesn't stop, things could get difficult. Sonny nods his understanding and asks to go sit with her; Tony tells him to go ahead, and he tells his fiancée that their child is, indeed, fine. He tells her that she's a fighter, and that she has to "fight dirty" to save both herself and their child; hardly daring to touch her, he whispers, "Don't leave me, please." Tony appears and tells him that the bleeding hasn't stopped. Sonny has to choose between saving Carly's life, or the life of the baby. Sonny asks Tony to explain again to him what is happening. Tony explains that the placenta is ripped such that it is a continuous bleeding wound, it can't be repaired because it is like a sponge. The baby is too young to be born, and they need to act fast or else Carly will bleed to death. Sonny asks to be allowed to go in & talk with her. He approaches Carly, sits down, touches her hand and looks at the fetal monitor, the heart rate is 120. The baby's heart rate continues to drop, down now to 60. He positions himself to look at her stomach and addresses the baby. "You changed me, you made me a father.  You changed how I look at people. Your mother for instance . . . You would have loved her, I mean you already love her. You can feel her heart beat. . . She loves you and I love you . . . It's going to be a long time until I hold you, or you see my face, or hear your mother's voice again, but I don't want you to be scared, because everything is going to be all right, little boy. & some day . . . Until then I'll always hold you in my heart. I have to go, I have to go, good-bye". Sonny walks out to Tony & tells him to go ahead with the procedure to save Carly. He returns to the window to watch. As Jax & Chloe arrive they're talking to Tony they spot Sonny's back looking in on Carly. Tony tells them that Carly had an accident. As Carly is prepped by the doctors & nurses, Sonny watches. His expression itself is heartbreaking. The doctor comes out to Sonny, and assures him that Carly came through the procedure fine and that there were no complications. Sonny asks to be able to go in and see her. As he sits next to her this time, he looks and sees the fetal monitor shows a heart rate of 0. He reaches for her hair; "Carly, the doctor says you're going to be okay. No complications. The baby isn't a complication, this baby was our life, just ask us. You have to listen to me, don't worry about him, he's going to be all right. He's going to a place where he'll be safe & happy. He'll never be afraid, he'll never be hurt. So, you dream about him, you have one last dream about our boy". Sonny continues to rest his hand near her head and rests his head on her stomach. A nurse comes in and asks Sonny to step outside while she checks on Carly. Sonny walks to the waiting room chairs and he rests his head in his hands. Jax, who is awaiting Chloe sees Sonny and seems to be about to approach him when Liz comes out and goes to Sonny. She asks him what is wrong. He tells her "we lost the baby". Liz sits down next to him and puts her arm on his shoulder, he is oblivious to all around him. Sonny says he had no choice, "the baby was too young to be born, by taking him I saved Carly. She doesn't know yet, but you know what, maybe that's better. She gets to spend a little more time with him." He then asks Liz to hold him for a little.

Edward and Lila arrived at the hospital to visit Carly and Sonny. Lila asked to speak to Sonny alone. Sonny confessed to Lila that he does not have the words to tell Carly, when she awakens, that they have lost their baby. Sonny shared his thoughts about Carly with Lila. He said she was indeed a good mother although not many people see that side of Carly. Lila mentioned that Sonny and Carly shared a child together and now they must grieve together for the loss. Sonny takes Lila’s hand and asked her if his son was in heaven somewhere safe and happy. Lila responded I believe in God and I believe that your son is with God. Sonny started to cry and he thanked Lila for her visit and returned to Carly’s side. Carly awakened and told Sonny of her dream with him and their boys celebrating his birthday. Then she opened her eyes. Carly asked why she was in the hospital. Where is the baby? Is something wrong with the baby? Sonny responded by saying the baby is gone. Carly, not fully awake, does not understand and demands to see her son. She yelled to Sonny to leave so that she can see her baby. Finally Sonny had to just say that their baby is dead. Carly loses it. Amy rushed in to give her a sedative. Sonny looked lost at this point, even pitiful. Once the medicine took effect, Sonny told Carly to take it easy. Carly was devastated. Sonny tried to explain to Carly what happened to her and the choice he had to make to save her own life. This day ended with Carly asking Sonny did he at least get to hold their son Sonny said no. Carly continued to repeat, it is not fair, they had a son and did not get to hold him. It is not fair. Tears rolled down Carly’s face.

Carly asked the nurse if Bobbie had called and the nurse expressed her regret, but said that Audrey could not seem to contact Bobbie. She asked if there was anything else she could get for her and Carly shook her head “No.” Just then, Edward knocked and came in with flowers from Lila’s garden. He offered regrets from both himself and Lila. He asked if there was anything they could do and she said they could let Michael go. She told him it was AJ’s fault that the baby had died and Edward assured her it was just a horrible accident. Carly insisted that AJ was drunk and assaulted her like he had so many times. She asked how many babies Edward had lost to that drunk! Edward wished her well and left.

Sonny arrived at the penthouse and Leticia told him that Michael had been watching for him. She explained how edgy the little boy had been, jumping at every sound. Sonny told her that he was bringing Carly home that day and asked her to put some things into a bag for her. He started talking to Michael about the baby, unsure really of how to proceed. He told the little boy that their baby would not be coming home, but would be going straight to heaven instead. Later, Leticia commented that she was surprised Sonny could get Michael to go down for his nap so easily. He asked her if she’d gotten the nursery cleared away like he asked and she told him Johnny had done it for her. He told her he didn’t want Carly to have to see it when she came home. Johnny announced Mike and he came in with a flourish, suggesting that he, Sonny and Michael go to the park. He was taken aback when Sonny told him they had lost the baby and asked why he hadn’t been called. “What could you have done?” Sonny asked. He told Mike that he had to go get Carly from the hospital, then sadly told him that the baby had been a boy.

Tony came in to speak with Carly and see how she was doing. She asked if Bobbie had called and Tony told her, “Not yet” but assured her he had left a message on her voice mail and with Betty and he was sure they’d be hearing from her soon. Carly said that she guessed Tony was happy she’d lost the baby since he said he pitied a child that had her and Sonny for parents. He told her he would never wish this on her or anyone and that he wanted her to know the medical team did all they could to save the baby. Carly said she didn’t want to hear it. Tony went on to say that there was no complication from her head injury and Carly countered that at least AJ hadn’t given her a new personality like he did to Jason and that she imagined everyone was disappointed about that. Tony said that, speaking as a person who has lost a child, it might help to know that there was no way to save the baby’s life. They just had to save her and he hoped that would give her some peace. She started to cry and Sonny arrived right then and ordered Tony out of the room. He explained that he was trying to tell Carly how sorry he was for her loss and Sonny backed off, then asked Carly if she was alright. She said she just wanted to go home. She asked if he had heard from Bobbie and he said he hadn’t, but that he had somebody looking for her. Noticing the bag, she asked if Leticia had helped him pack it and he said she had, so if she didn’t like what was in there to blame the nanny. Carly said she would be ready in a bit. As they left, she sadly said she hadn’t pictured going home from the hospital like this. Carly went home from the hospital. Before she left, Edward visited her to express his sympathy. Sonny tried to explain to Michael that his baby brother wouldn't be coming to live with them. When Carly got home, she told Michael that God wanted the baby now, so the baby was in Heaven. Michael kept saying, "baby sad." Carly told Michael that she and "Uncle Sonny" love him very much and are so glad to have him. When they got home, Carly snuggled Michael and said they were all the family they had left now. Carly and Michael snuggled on the sofa and chatted quietly while Michael finished his bottle. Carly put him to bed, then slowly walked into the nursery. She was shocked to see that it was completely bare, sank to the floor and began to cry.

Meanwhile, AJ approached Sonny on the docks to apologize. Sonny asked why he would want to talk to the man who got drunk and killed his baby. AJ apologized to Sonny for his part in Carly's accident, but Sonny was absolutely still and hostile. He said that AJ was drunk and took the life of Sonny's child, but because of AJ's child, AJ's actions will go unpunished. . He said that AJ was not a man, had no pride or honor, and that AJ owes his life to Michael. Sonny said that he does not want the blood of Michael's father on his hands, but warned AJ never to come near him or his family. AJ scooted away as Luke arrived on the scene and asked Sonny what that was all about. Sonny told Luke about losing the baby, and explained about Michael when Luke asked why he didn't just kill AJ. Luke was extremely sympathetic, and Sonny tried to say that it wasn't the same for him as it had been for Luke, as he hadn't known his son as a person, but his heart wasn't in what he was saying, and he left.

Sonny came in to find Carly in the nursery. She demanded that he return the nursery things, and asked if he were trying to pretend the baby never existed. He tried to explain that he thought it would be easier for her not to be reminded, but she shouted that maybe it was just easier for him, and asked if he had moved on? He told her he had not, and admitted giving the baby things to a children's shelter where it could go to a child who needs it. Carly screamed that she needed the things, and demanded again that Sonny or Johnny go and get them back. Sonny miserably explained that he couldn't do that as Carly cried over and over, "How could you?" A minute later, huddled on the floor once again, Carly quietly apologized to Sonny, adding that she knew he missed the baby, too, and asked if they could start over. There was no answer, and Carly turned to see that Sonny had gone. Downstairs, Sonny poured himself a drink, looked at it and started to shake, dropping the glass, then stared miserably at his reflection in the mirror. Carly thanked Sonny for getting Michael to sleep. She said that he always does that so well. Then Carly asked Sonny when did he think that Michael will stop asking about the baby. She had tried to explain the loss to him, but Michael was still not grasping the concept. Sonny replied that maybe Michael is having a difficult time because they are still struggling with the issue as well.

Dara and Taggert arrived at the Penthouse and questioned Sonny and Carly about the fall. The paramedics reported to the police that Carly may have been pushed. Taggert asked Carly if she would like to press charges. Sonny answered for her and said that the fall was an accident. Carly then confirmed that it was an accident and she had lost her balance. Dara and Taggert excused themselves and left. Sonny, being his protective self, asked Carly to get something to eat to keep up her strength. He had run an errand and would be back shortly. Sonny went to Lilly's grave. It was the anniversary of Lilly and his first child's death. Sonny informed Lilly that there was a new baby in heaven and she should look after him too. Juan showed up at the grave too and bought flowers. Sonny congratulated Juan on him being the opening act for Eddie Mane. Juan said it was the best time in his life. Afterwards Juan gave his condolences to Sonny for his loss. Sonny told Juan that he hoped that everything good in life will come to him. Then, Sonny left to give Juan time with his mom.

Emily visited Carly at the Penthouse to offer her sympathy for the loss of her baby. At first Carly was skeptical, but soon she realized that Emily was serious in her compassion. Emily even said that maybe she and Carly should work harder to get along for Michael's sake. Carly extended an open invitation for Emily to visit Michael. They ended in a very nice place.

Mike showed up at the Penthouse and cut Emily's visit with Carly short. Mike stated that he is there to see Sonny and will wait for him. Emily left and Mike started in on Carly. Mike advised Carly that today was the anniversary of Lilly's death and the loss of his first child. Mike went on about how this baby meant everything to Sonny and that Carly disregarded the importance of this baby to Sonny. Mike further insulted Carly by stating that she was reckless and was unable to care and protect her own baby and was not concerned with the cost to Sonny and his emotional state. Carly was in a bad place and not her normal fighting self. She cried out that she loved her baby several times. Carly screamed that she did not want to fall she did not want to hurt the baby. Sonny entered and asked Mike what the hell had he done to Carly. After seeing Carly's present condition, Sonny ordered Mike to get out. Sonny immediately tried to comfort Carly. He informed her that Mike was totally out of line for what he said to her. Carly asked Sonny if he thought that it was her fault. Carly started to sob heavily. Sonny's private line rings. It is Larkin. Sonny told Larkin to disappear or he would report him to his superiors at the FBI and hung up on him. Sonny returned to Carly and side that he was sorry for the interruption. He looked at Carly and said she looked exhausted and she should try to get some sleep. Carly asked Sonny about his day. He admitted to her that he went to visit Lily's grave. Carly cried that she made his day worse. Sonny replied no and told Carly to get some rest. Carly finally agreed and headed upstairs. She looked back at Sonny, in pain, and felt awful for the anguish state he was experiencing.

Sonny comes downstairs to find Carly holding one of the baby's toys, a small stuffed bunny. He tries to get her to come upstairs and play with Michael, and comments that she's still in her pajamas and it's afternoon. She's defensive and says she just needs a little time. Sonny tells Carly he thinks she' a good other, and he'll take care of whatever she needs. She tells him that this morning she went in to check on Michael and spend some time with him, and that's when she found the bunny. She didn't want Michael to see her so upset, so she left. The phone rings, it's Roy and Bobbie. Sonny gets Bobbie on the phone to talk to Carly. Carly asks her to come over. Bobbie tells Sonny they got what they needed on Larkin. Sonny leaves and Carly comes downstairs and Bobbie takes one look at her and guesses what happened. Bobbie comforts Carly and gets the full story (pretty accurately, Carly sounds regretful for provoking AJ and doesn't really seem to blame him.) The doctor told her she can still have children, and she's bitter and angry…no other child will ever replace the one she lost. Bobbie comforts her. Carly tells Bobbie that Sonny cleared out the baby's room and she realizes she was pretty unfair to him. She doesn't know why they can't hold onto each other during this difficult time. Bobbie tells her to do just that. Carly decides she's ready to get dressed.

Sonny comes up to Roy and Hannah on the docks, and Hannah offers her condolences and thank him for helping her father. She leaves and Roy tells Sonny he has the evidence, and asks what was Sonny's loss. Sonny tells Roy what happened, and how overwrought he is over the choice he was forced to make…Carly or the baby. It sounds like he knows he did the right thing but still feels guilty. Roy reassures him and then gives Sonny copies of the account information he has on Larkin. Sonny says he'll have Alexis arrange a meeting.

Sonny comes home. Carly is dressed and she asks him whether they should save the bunny or give it to Michael. They decide to save it. She asks him if he'll make dinner if she sets the table. As he is in the kitchen, a delivery arrives…it's the cradle he ordered. She is badly shaken and grabs him and hugs him hard. He tells her he's sorry. Sonny explained that he had special ordered the cradle weeks ago as a surprise.
