Distributed.net is currently running several cryptography projects:
  • RC5 - 72: This program legally cracks 72 bit data encryption schemes for a contest set up by the RSA Security Labs. The person whos computer finds the encryption key gets $1000 (US).


  • The Optimal Golumb-Ruler Projects

    In mathematics, the term "Golomb Ruler" refers to a set of non-negative integers such that no two distinct pairs of numbers from the set have the same difference. Conceptually, this is similar to a ruler constructed in such a way that no two pairs of marks measure the same distance. An Optimal Golomb Ruler (OGR) is the shortest Golomb Ruler possible for a given number of marks.OGR's have many applications including sensor placements for X-ray crystallography and radio astronomy.
  • OGR-24: The Optimal 24-mark Golumb Ruler project is searching for the shortest possible ruler for 24-marks.
  • OGR-25: The Optimal 25-mark Golumb Ruler project is searching for the shortest possible ruler for 25-marks.

ECC2-109, is a distributed effort to solve Certicom's ECC2-109 challenge. The challenge offers a $10,000 (US) prize. The two participants who find matching Distinguished Point values will each receive $2,500 (US). The remaining $5,000 (US) will be split among the eCompute ECC2-109 project developers.


The NEO Project

The NEO Project uses the NEO-c (Network Exchange Operation for Charity) platform to participate in various computing challenges and projects, and donates any winnings to the charities specified by its users. The volunteer whose computer finds the winning key for a challenge gets 10% of the prize money.

  • The project's first challenge is the RSA 576-bit factoring challenge. The project's first attemp to solve the challenge was through random guesses. For this attempt, volunteers generated 39,033,522 packets (154885015296E+15 keys checked) for the project. The attempt ended on January 10, 2003. The project's second attempt, Phase 2, will involve the use of an algorithm. This attempt will begin on February 15th, 2003 with the release of a new Beta client.


  • The second challenge is the Xbox Linux Project, a challenge to crack the 2048-bit RSA private encryption key Microsoft uses to sign Xbox media. If this key is discovered, then Linux can be run on the Xbox without modifying the Xbox hardware. The programs developers are currently working on a more scalable client and will have a private beta version ready around February 15th, 2003.

    Operation Project X is a distributed effort to solve the Xbox Linux Project, a challenge to crack the 2048-bit RSA private encryption key Microsoft uses to sign Xbox media. If this key is discovered, Linux can be run on the Xbox without modifying the Xbox hardware. The client supports users behind firewalls/proxy servers. A Windows GUI client and a Windows and Linux console client is available. Note that you need to install Microsoft's .NET architecture to use the client.

    RSAttack576, is a distributed effort to solve the RSA 576-bit challenge and win a $10,000 (US) prize. The user who finds the winning key will receive $2,000 (US), and the user who processes the most packets will receive $1,000 (US). The project website is written in French, but you can view an English translation of it. The client is available for Linux and Windows. The client does not appear to support users behind firewalls. And it is not appropriate for dialup Internet users: it connects to the project server about every 50 seconds. A future version will be more dialup-friendly. The client is optimized for the AMD XP CPU.
