Ring Gear Removal and Installation

Install the ring gear bolts hand tight in a star pattern.

Torque the bolts with a torque wrench in that same star pattern. Start by torqueing the bolts to 20 ft./lbs., then to 40 ft./lbs., 60 ft./lbs., and finally 85 ft./lbs. Notice that I had to brace the carrier using a piece of black pipe entered through the carrier and anchored to a bench vice.
During the sequence of torqueing the bolts down to 85 ft./lbs. I had problems bracing the carrier enough to tighten the bolts down. At one point I lost control of the unit and it spun to the ground. In the end I had to place the carrier on the floor and use a large piece of black iron pipe (the one used to remove the axle bearings earlier) to brace it against the wall. If at this point you have not removed the differential pieces (because you are not rebuilding the traction lok unit) you will have to be creative and very carefull.
