*Welcome to the forest*

In the spirituality of New Zealand forests it is tapu to remove trees without asking Tane Mahuta, god of the forests for permission. Tapu means "sacred" in Maori. If something, someone, or someplace is tapu, no human can take or touch it. Sometimes you aren't allowed to even approach it. Violate this and incur the gods' wrath!!

"You may," said a voice close to him. "But you must ask Tane Mahuta, god of the forest and birds, for permission. He created all these trees and birds for Papatuanuku the Earth Mother. Ask him when you want to use any of it." ....
