A six-piece rock explosive from Germany,
Rammstein was formed in 1993 by Richard Kruspe (guitar), Paul Landers
(guitar), Till Lindemann (vocals), Oliver Riedel (bass), Christoph
Schneider (drums) and Flake (pronounced flah-keh) Lorenz (keyboards).
Rammstein (also known as the town where in 1988 three Italian jet
planes collided, killing 80 people at a USAF air show) has built a
loyal following in their native Germany with their loud industrial
rock and pyromania-filled live shows (lead singer Lindemann -- a
former Olympic swimmer -- is known to set himself on fire in the
middle of performances).
Their debut album, Herzeleid (Heartache), was released in
the United States in 1996. The song "Rammstein" on the album
Herzeleid was dedicated to the tragic USAF event. Macabre film
director David Lynch also selected the song “Rammstein”, as well
as "Heirate Mich" to appear in his movie Lost Highway.
Rammstein's follow-up, Sehnsucht, (Longing) was released in
Germany in 1997, where it entered the album charts at No. 1. In
February 1998, the CD was picked up for distribution in the United
States by Slash Records.
In 1999, the band got a bit of unwelcome publicity when the two
teenagers involved in the April Columbine High School shootings in
Littleton, CO expressed admiration for their music. The band members
publicly disavowed any connection between their music and the
horrendous acts of violence. Later the same year they release the live
album, Live Aus Berlin
Rammstein's latest album, Mutter, came out
in 2001.
