Shaw's Pygmalion
The play
starts on a rainy night in the streets of London. The main characters are
introduced in this scene: Henry Higgins, Colonel Pickering and Eliza Doolittle.
In the first scene Eliza is selling flowers and attempts to sell some flowers to
Pickering, the only currency he had were to big for her to make change for,
Higgins becomes involved when he starts writing down what Eliza says, she
becomes offended because she thinks he is a police officer, it is made clear
that he is not a detective, it is revealed that he studies language and speech,
Higgins and Pickering discover who the other one is and are quite excited, the
rain stops and all of the bystanders scatter, Eliza is still determined to sell
some flowers so Higgins throws her a hefty amount of money in pity, Higgins and
Pickering leave and that ends the beginning of the play. Eliza comes to
Higgins for voice lessons, he agrees. Pickering ends up helping him with
the training. She learns quickly, Higgins falls for her, they succeed in
teaching her, she is passed off as a duchess at a ball. At the end of the
story Higgins gets into a huge argument with Eliza and she ends up leaving his
house, she threatens to marry a younger man named Freddy, the story ends without
telling if she stays with him or leaves for good on her own or if she marries.
