Head Coach Joe Barkin' Kelly


Coach Joe Barkin' Kelly coached for two seasons at Tehachapi High School, compiling an overall record of 7 wins, 9 losses, and 1 tie. Coach Kelly guided the 1939 Warriors to their first winning season in school history! As a tribute to his dedication to the school, the 1940-41 Tomahawk Yearbook was dedicated to coach Kelly by the Senior Class.

Coach Kelly was a 1935 graduate of USC earning his B.S Degree in Physical Education and Speech. He was a tri-sport athlete at USC playing the wide receiver position on the football team, was the Captain of the basketball team, and played first base for the baseball team.

Prior to coaching at Tehachapi, Kelly coached the Los Angeles Athletic Club for three years. Kelly left Tehachapi to teach and coach at Fresno High School (1941 to 1953) in Fresno, CA.
