USS PATRIOT: SPECIFICATIONS

The Chennault-class starship was conceived in 2372 as one of several solutions to the ever-present problem of bridging the gap between Explorer and Battleship types. The apparent failure of the Galaxy-class (Mk. I) to survive in the current climate produced a further urgency to find an answer that was effective, but also immediate.

The result was a creation constructed of 78% Galaxy spaceframe: more importantly it carried a silhouette far smaller than its predacessor. Standing at over 50 metres shorter in overall length and a reduction in height of 7 decks, the Chennault-class was an immediate improvement. Tactically, this increased her manoeuverability and reduced her target size.

Many of the 'luxuries' present on the Galaxy-class had been removed and replaced by weapons upgrades and essential systems. The modules for crew quarters were far reduced in size, sacrificing quality for quantity. Generally, the technology remained the same, though upgraded in many sections. The inclusion of two Type-XII phasers mounted on the underside of the saucer, a variation of which later appeared in the Galaxy-class refit (or Mk. II), was the central improvement in it offensive capabilities, plus numerous additional torpedo launchers and phaser banks. The class also included a huge shuttlebay facility 'grafted' onto its back, improved warp core and shield generators, plus back-up systems system-wide.

The USS Chennault was launched in 2375, a few short months following the end of the Dominion War. Construction since then has progressed steadily since then and currently eight of her class are in active service. Currently they are used in a stand-alone role, patrolling the border, and in supporting small task forces. So far, they have proved sucessful and no losses have been recorded so far.

Named for Claire L. Chennault, a 20th century American army General who pioneered in aviation pursuit tactics and originated the idea of using paratroopers. He also organized volunteer American aviators into a famous corps known as the "Flying Tigers."
