| Verieve....A young mastreel princess from the
land known as the Icy Waste, she knows very little of the corporation or the outside
world. She meets Jakob when she rescues him from a cold death. Jakob is on a mission to
find core in the untamed land and meets his match in the form of a large tundra beast.
Jakob manages to slay the monster but not before he suffers a wound given by the beast's
poisonous tail. Verieve finds him and is intrigued by his appearance. Soon after she
learns that some of his companions have been rescued from the blizzard and taken to her
city of Gordream. Though her people knew of the existence of the corporation, they had
never seen any sign of them in the waste. Her father, King Mordean, is impressed by
Jakob and the courage of his fellows and invites them to stay until the corporation can
rescue them. Jakob realizes that the city is the site of the core and reports this using
the transmitter he had brought for the occasion. Mordean refuses the corporate offer and
Jakob, not being a corporate politician, accepts his refusal. In the days that follow Verieve
spend all her time trying to get to know Jakob. She also shows that she is an expert hunter and
warrior. She does not know of Jakob's love for Sandrianna. She will learn of that love soon enough....
