Clothing

On the whole the national population still choose to wear their traditional dress. For men this is the'dishdash(a)' or 'khandura' - a white full length-dress, which is worn with a white or red checked headdress, known as a 'gutra'.  In public, women wear the black 'abaya' - a long, loose black robe that covers their normal clothes, plus a headscarf. Some women also wear a thin black veil hiding their face and/or gloves, while older woman sometimes still wear a mask known as a 'burkha', which covers the nose, brow and cheekbones. For visitors,  lightweight summer clothing is suitable for most of the year, but something slightly warmer may be needed in the evening for the winter months. In the summer also, be sure to take some sort of jacket or sweater when visiting hotels or cinema, as the air conditioning can be pretty fierce! In the evenings, restaurants and clubs usually have a mixture of styles - Arabic, Asian or Western - anything goes! During the day, as in any place with loads of sun, good quality sunglasses, hats and buckets of suncream are needed to avoid the lobster look.
