1989 – Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA

  • Brian Hugh Warner, a journalist, joins forces with friend Scott Putesky to create a band that will challenge the American Image and way of life.

  • Almagamating the names of Starlet’s and Serial Killers, to wag an accusing finger at the media that immortalised stars and killers on the same front pages of their glossy magazines, Marilyn Manson and The Spooky Kids were formed.

  • Churchill’s Hideaway, Miami, playing in front of a crowd of no more than twenty, and with no live drummer – instead using a drum machine - the band performed their first gig. At the time it was thought that due to the nervousness of the front man, the band would never go beyond the first night, but steadily by word of mouth their fame grew.

1990

  • As the bands popularity increased, due in part to Marilyn Manson’s home made designed, flyers and the talk of the onstage antics, the band decided to ditch the drum machine and Sara Lee Lucas, played his first gig as the bands live drummer.

  • Already gone from the band were Zsa Zsa Speck and Olivia Newton Bundy, who were replaced by Gidget Gein (Brad Stewart) and Madonna Wayne Gacy (Stephen Biers Jnr).

1991

  • The band continued to grow, and their stage antics become more wild, starting the first rumours that would continue to dog the band during their continued domination.

  • The band began to distribute tapes of their songs on their own "Beat Your Mother" label, with covers designed by their frontman. These sold in local record stores and at the shows.

  • Early renditions included now classic tracks such as "Lunchbox" and "My Monkey" (a homage to the Charles Manson song.).

1992

  • As their sound grew in popularity, Marilyn Manson and The SpookyKids drew their first nominations in local metal awards, the South Florida Slammies. They won Best Hard Alternative Band and Band of the Year.

  • One of their running mates in the competition was a band called Amboog – A – Lard, whose bassist Jeordie White was fast becoming friends with Marilyn Manson.

  • Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails entered into negotiations with the band, looking for a support act for their upcoming tour and hoping to sign Marilyn Manson and the SpookyKids onto his newly formed Nothing Records, a subsidiary of Interscope.

  • With the possibility of world domination beckoning, and under the direction of the manager John Tovar the band shortened their name to the now known Marilyn Manson, much as Alice Cooper had twenty years before them.

  • The band performed one last gig, under the name of Mrs Scabtree, whose line up included Jessika, now with Jack Off Jill, and Jeordie White sporting a look that would be surnominous with his on stage character in later years. Manson played drums.

1993

  • Work began on the band’s debut album, Portrait of An American Family. Produced and recorded in part at the scene of one the Manson Families infamous gruesome murders, 1970’s actress Sharon Tate’s home. Finally the South Florida band were breaking out into the big time.

  • However, uncertainty prevailed within the band itself, when bassist Gidget Gein developed an uncontrollable Heroin addiction. Although this had been known beforehand, Gein’s numerous overdoses meant that the frontman, and close friend Marilyn Manson, had to make one of the first of many hard decisions. Firing Gein, Manson hired Jeordie, under the new moniker, Twiggy Ramirez, to play bass.

1994

  • In July, Marilyn Manson released Portrait of An American Family, and went on a US tour with Nine Inch Nails. Already the band began to spark protest, because during one performance in Utah, Manson was seen to rip pages from the Latter Day Saint’s Bible, The Book Of Mormon.

1995

  • The bands EP, Smells Like Children was released. Their cover of the 1980’s Eurythmics hit, Sweet Dreams (Are Made of this), pushed the band into the limelight for the first time, with the video being broadcast on MTV late at night.

  • In March, Sara Lee Lucas was replaced as the bands drummer by Kenny Wilson, who’s moniker became Ginger Fish.

  • The band were back in the studio to record an all together darker piece of work, called AntiChrist Superstar. It is the first of a trilogy concept album. Again it is produced by Trent Reznor.

  • Daisy Berkowitz left the band to follow his own musical direction. He was replaced by Mike Linton (Zim Zum).

1996

  • In October, AntiChrist Superstar was released. It’s first single "The Beautiful People" was the final piece in the puzzle assailing the band to international stardom.

  • Marilyn Manson began the "Dead to the World" tour, which would run for two years, spreading his gospel to keen followers whilst riling the Bible Belt Groups.

  • In September the band received it’s first MTV Video Music Award nomination for Best Hard Rock Video – "Sweet Dreams". They also won another Slammie showing their had lost none of their old following by their increasing world-wide fame.

1997

  • Marilyn Manson’s notoriety reached the Senate who were investigating the effects of modern music on America’s youth. This followed a number of suicide’s that protractors blamed on Manson.

  • "Remix and Repent", the band’s second EP was released, whilst the band contributed tracks to the soundtracks of Lost Highway and Private Parts.

  • Marilyn Manson and Twiggy Ramirez make a blink and you miss it appearance on David Lynch’s Lost Highway.

1998

  • Marilyn Manson writes and releases his autobiography "The Long Hard Road out of Hell", with journalist Neil Strauss.

  • In June due to Ginger falling ill, Manson has to cancel 7 tour dates in Europe.

  • There’s another line up change as Zim Zum leaves to pursue a solo career. He is replaced by John 5 – John Lowery.

  • The band release the second in their trilogy concept series, their third studio album, the Glam rock inspired "Mechanical Animals". It topped the Billboard 200 album chart for one week.

  • The band receive more award nominations. This time a European Music Award for Best Rock Video. They also win the Billboard Video Music Award for Best Clip (Hard Rock/Metal) and the Maximum Vision Award for the video "The Dope Show".

1999

    In April, following a tragic high school shooting in Columbine, Colorado, Marilyn Manson find themselves at the forefront of a media and social backlash against rock music.

  • In May, in response to Columbine, the band cancelled the last five dates of their tour. Manson writes an essay, which is published in Rolling Stones, entitled "Columbine – Whose Fault is it?"

  • In October the band received an MTV Europe Music Award nomination for Best Rock Artist.

  • The first live album, "The Last Tour on Earth", along with "God is in the TV", a collection of the band’s music videos.

2000

  • The bands most angry album to date and the last of the trilogy concept series is released. "Holywood: In the Shadow of the Valley of Death" is seen by many as a two fingered response to the scapegoating of the previous year. Despite a welcome return to the shock antics, it didn’t sell as well as expected.

2001

  • The band receives a nomination for a Grammy in the category of Best Metal Performance for the video "Astonishing Panorama of the End Times."

  • Manson was charged with criminal sexual conduct after rubbing his crotch on a security guard during a show in Michigan.

  • The band contributes a track for the flick "Not Another Teen Movie". Their cover of ‘Tainted Love’, first made famous by 80’s British group, Soft Cell, debuts high in the singles charts across the globe. The video features appearances from Joey Jordison (Slipknot) and former KMFDM member, Tim Skold.

2002

  • Citing artistic differences, Twiggy Ramirez leaves the band. He reverts back to his given name, Jeordie White, and joins James Maynard’s (Tool), A Perfect Circle. He is replaced by Tim Skold.

  • Manson works on the Resident Evil soundtrack contributing score music. Tim Skold co produced and worked on the tracks also.

  • Two years after it’s release, Holywood is finally certified as a gold record.

  • Manson stars briefly in Michael Moore’s "Bowling for Columbine". Manson is interviewed about his views on the tragedy.

2003

  • Marilyn Manson release their fifth studio album, the burlesque/Vaudeville laced "The Golden Age of Grotesque" on May 13th. He likens it to a ten year old child, a reference to the band being ten years old. The album tops the Billboard Top 200 chart for one week, and also attains gold status.

  • Manson appears in "Party Monster" as transvestite Christina, alongside one time child star Macaulay Culkin.

  • During the "Grotesk Burlesk" Tour (Rock AM Ring, Germany) Manson and John 5 come to blows on stage. The brief fracas causes speculation about John’s standing in the band.

  • Gidget Gein returns to the band, albeit briefly, as he appears in the [s]AINT video.

2004

  • In April it is announced that John 5 and the band have parted ways. The split is announced as amicable and John begins work on solo album "Vertigo".

  • Manson returns to the screen in Asia Argento’s "The Heart is Deceitful Above all Things" based on the JT Leroy book. Manson’s performance as Jackson receives critical acclaim.

  • Wedding bells are in the air as Manson announces his engagement to Burlesque Queen Dita Von Teese.

  • In September Marilyn Manson release "Lest We Forget The Best of", an album that Manson describes as a "farewell". Speculation abounds that the band are splitting but Manson confirms that new material is being worked on and that the "farewell" signified an emotionally traumatic year. In some versions, the previously unseen [s]AINT video can be seen on the accompanying DVD.

  • The single from "Lest We forget", a cover of 80’s British band Depeche Mode’s "Personal Jesus" storms the charts globally.

  • During a performance on Germany’s Viva Comet Awards, Ginger Fish falls from the stage suffering significant injuries. His temporary replacement for the upcoming "Against All God’s" US tour is Chris Vrenna. The former Nine Inch Nail’s man had previously contributed to Marilyn Manson albums.

  • As the band begin the first stage of the "Against All Gods" tour, Mark Chaussee has joined them on stage as guitarist. At time of writing no announcement has yet been made to say this permanent.

2005

  • Manson completes the Against All Gods Tour which he has taken across the world, visiting various festivals also.

  • Speculation as to whether Manson is going to retire are fuelled by magazine articles and misquoted interviews.

  • The above rumour is squashed with two comprehensive interviews - one with MTV and one with MMUSA. Manson mentions that his new album is almost done and that retirement is far from his mind.

  • Manson announces a desire to go into film production with the first films based on Lewis Caroll's "Phantasmagoria". He calls this "Horripilation".

  • Manson also reopens the "Celebritarian" websites that were first hinted at during the Holywood and Mechanical Animals era's. This is marked by simple image of the Cross of Lorraine, which when clicked, links to the official Marilyn Manson website.

  • After a mislead of a wedding in April, Manson and Dita finally tie the knot in December in Ireland. Tabloids are full of stories about "blood vows" and other so called "satanic" ceremonies for the wedding. In fact the wedding is a quite affair at friend Gottfried Helnwein's castle in Kilkenny. Images will appear in early 2006 issues of American "Vogue".
