: At the start of the 2000 Marijuana March, me, my boyfriend, and a few other people waited for the march to start. All was peaceful. As we started marching, my boyfriend and I lit up a nice big blunt of goodness, with about 30 people around us doing the same thing. We smoked half of it, and noticed that people were getting arrested left and right. Being cautious, we put the blunt out. As we kept on walking, somebody came up to my boyfriend, grabbed him by the shoulder, and told him to follow him. Tim, wanting to keep the peace, silently followed him. As he repeatedly asked the man for a badge or id, he put him in a white pick up van and drove away. No information about what will happen or anything. It is now 2:30 p.m. the next day (it happened around 1:45 yesterday) and no word from him. I called the place where they were keeping all the people that were arrested, and they informed me that over 350 people got arrested. I came to support the cause......but it seems as if the pigs never learn.
: Weed is Good, you shouldn't get arrested for it.

I was arrested on Saturday morning, around 11:45 or so. I was subsequently held in FIVE different holding cells over a 27-hour period. Amongst us lucky potheads were actual hardened CRIMINALS, including:
--A man arrested for holding up a bodega at gunpoint.
--A man arrested for jumping a subway turnstile--he turned out to have three outstanding arrest warrants for VIOLENT CRIMES.
--Several GANG MEMBERS, arrested for various VIOLENT CRIMES.
I assure you that these places are horrible. Without going into detail, let me just say that you would not wish going there on anyone.
Certainly, those arrested at the march Saturday did not deserve to be there. And I suspect that there may still be MANY people still locked up at Central Booking, where I spent most of my time (13 hours) in a 30 x 20-foot cell with as many as 75 people at one point. In this cell there are three hard benches and a lot of floor. That is where you were expected to sleep. Needless to say, I did not.
I hope your boyfriend got out OK.

I, too, was arrested on Saturday w/a friend for a ROACH at Battery Park. I was grabbed and taken into custody at 2:30; piggies never read me my rights, nor formally charged me w/anything. I spent the next 37 hours in 4 different holding cells and I was not allowed to call anyone, not even a lawyer. I was treated just like the REAL criminals that were being held w/us. The whole time I was there I heard way too many stories of people being arrested simply because they were in the vicinity of someone smoking or for a million other bullshit excuses; underaged kids being held w/out notifying their parents; i could go on. And all this for nothing....most cases were dismissed. Over 500 people being held - for nothing. At the time I went before the judge (11:30 pm Sunday), central booking was STILL packed with our fellow marchers.
All in all, our rights were clearly violated this weekend, and it was all because Guiliani wanted to make an example of us. I guess he didn't like the fact that he lost the battle over the permits for the parade and this was his way of getting back at us.
Best of luck to all of those that suffered this past weekend because we chose to exercise our right to do what we want to our own bodies.
peace~
