Some History, Background & FAQs on General Strikes, National Strikes and/or a Peace Strike: |
WHAT ABOUT JULY 1st TO 10th 2005? Innauguration Day? When in the course of human events, the government of the USA fails to heed the wishes of the people of the USA (whether they vote for lesser evils or not), we need to bring business-as-usual to a halt and engage in peacemaking work and demonstrations in every town and city all over this nation. When labor groups go on strike, one activity to do is to picket at the place(s) where the laborers have their grievances. (Such places in this NATIONAL strike would be Federal buildings which are part of the war-mongering, and military installations which obey the federal employees causing war-mongering. Such places are sometimes called "power points".) A STRIKE FOR PEACE on the day(s) the slaughter officially increases in Iraq means NOT going to work, NOT buying anything that day (including gas), NOT going to school, etc. This is a day we can instead: ADORN public places and ourselves with green ribbons for peace, BE present at "power point" places with our peace message, street theater, etc. GO door-to-door to talk to our neighbors, HOLD letter-writing parties, AND CONDUCT MANY other creative peaceful activities on this self-declared communal day of "ZEROWORK for war".
PS - The green ribbon campaign is part of the strike, but has a life of its own too. People are asked to wear green ribbons for peace everywhere, and to decorate their cars, trees, and other public places with green ribbons too. This is a simple thing anyone can do. All those green ribbons show how many of us oppose the mass destruction of Iraq. The green peace symbols are generally heartening and also make it feel safer for others to honor their own peaceful inclinations. Participants around the country will appreciate YOUR help in getting the word out, anywhere & everywhere you can. This is a grassroots, decentralized action that depends on local peace groups AND peace-minded individuals all over the country. |
