Immortality and The Great Work (Video Transcript)
7.14.2011
Hi, my name is Jeremy Crow and in this video I'm going to explain a bit about The Great Work for the Left Hand Path which is Immortality or Apotheosis, which is becoming divine.
So let's just start off at the very beginning. So from conception you're in a state of what I like to call Unconscious Unity or Harmony. You're not really self-aware but everything is in, kind of, the state of harmony in... you could... some people call it Eden, you could say, but then as we're exposed to the universe or the world around us we start to realize that some things are pleasurable. Some things are unpleasant. Something, you know... there's light and dark things like that and so we start to encounter multiplicity but we're still not really aware that our own psyche is becoming fragmented.
But then we do become aware that there are parts of ourselves that are in conflict with other parts. So that's the stage that I like to call Conscious Multiplicity or Conscious Duality, I guess you could say, in a sense, but it's more Multiplicity. Then from that point we can work toward Conscious Unity within ourselves. And if you can get all of the different parts of yourself or all the different functions of the self or the psyche all working in harmony toward common goals that is the Complete Unified Self.
And in certain traditions, such as Taoism is one, in certain forms of Hermeticism as well they talk about how if you can get that kind of unity within the self strong enough that after the death of the physical body your psyche doesn't break down. It survives and it becomes immortal in a sense. And that this immortal body, sometimes called the Diamond Body, or the Body of Light, the Cubic Stone... all kinds of different terms for this but it's essentially like a dream body and doesn't have the same limitations as a physical but in some traditions they say that it can still interact with the physical by manifesting a physical body whenever one is required or whatever.
Some people also say that if while alive you can get to a high enough stage of unity within the self that you can even start to integrate the body, the physical body into this. And in Tibetan Buddhism in particular they described this as the Rainbow Body, where after a Lama or yogi that is highly... very, very highly accomplished, after they die they try not to move the body for a week or so and some even claim that the body will shrink physically, sometimes even dramatically, and multicolored lights come off of the body. And that's one of the signs that in their tradition they claim is a sign of attaining the Body of Light.
