Teams Play Catch Up as NBA Nears Playoffs
March 21, 2003

In the Eastern Conference, teams like Milwaukee, Washington and even New York are battling out for the eight and final spot for the playoffs. On the other side of the pack, Houston and Phoenix are catching up to the last ride. As the number of games becomes fewer, each win proves to be crucial. The Playoff picture is slowly but surely taking form. Many teams won't be able to join the dance, and some are still fighting for a chance. Let's take a look at the teams who are playing catch up to the number 8 spot.

EASTERN CONFERENCE

Milwaukee Bucks. Beating the trade deadline, they got all-star Gary Payton and high-flying Desmond Mason from the Sonics strengthening their backcourt prowess with Sam Cassell already in the picture. Proving that both Payton and Cassell can play together, they manage to hold off teams and win games. But inconsistency can play a major role in their campaign for the playoffs. Losing key games down the stretch would be the cause of their demise.

Washington Wizards. Aside from the criticisms being brought about by Michael Jordan towards his teammates, the Wizards should also take a look at their bench. Injuries will keep the team at bay as they face formidable teams with records above .500. Keeping the team healthy is a component in making through the playoff picture. Let's just hope Jordan doesn't run out of gas.

WESTERN CONFERENCE

Houston Rockets. Yao Ming gave the Rockets a bigger boost their playoff run this season. Forward James Posey, after acquiring him from Denver gave Houston another offensive option. Looking at their lineup, they have a fighting chance as long as they keep their composure in keeping the lead during the dying minutes. Slumps in their record show that a wake up call is needed fast as tougher matchups will be faced.

Phoenix Suns. Keeping at pace with the Rockets comes the team of Stephon Marbury, Shawn Marion, Amare Stoudemire and the rest of the Suns. A better team this season, they are currently have an above .500 record. But as they belong to an overpowered conference, this achievement of theirs is quite unnoticed. Nonetheless, they still have the chance.

More to come soon.....
