B'z Let that ultra soul fight! Members vocals/lyrics: koshi inaba guitars/music: tak matsumoto If you totaled up numbers of albums sold, you'd probably expect Elvis Presley and the Beatles to be the best selling artists of all time. You'd be right (throw in Michael Jackson and Garth Brooks as well). What you probably wouldn't expect is that the fifth ranking artist is Japanese rock duo B'z. These guys have sold an obscene amount of albums, and have string of 31 number one singles. 31!! In a row!! O_o Unlike the other artists I've featured here, B'z don't have a visual bone in their collective bodies. They play pure, unadulterated arena rock. Tak's music mostly consists of catchy choruses and electrifying guitar solos. Koshi writes a wide range of lyrics, from romantic to sexy to downright silly. Somehow, the combination always manages to be perfect and a hell of a lot of fun. Both men are also consummate musicians. Koshi has a wonderfully expressive voice that he couples with a huge range. I really can't think of many artists that put as much emotion into a performance as this man. Tak Matsumoto is one of the greatest guitarists in history. He has two, TWO, Gibson Signature guitar lines. That's just astonishing. Even more astonishing is watching him play. He makes ridiculously complex guitar riffs look effortless. Like I said, B'z is the least visual band imaginable. However, that doesn't make their performances boring. Koshi has more energy than anyone I have ever seen, including hide. He jumps around stage, kicks at things, dances, plays air guitar... I could go on and on. He's just so much fun to watch. Tak is cool and laid back, but flashes an occasional smile that lights up his whole face. Together, the two of them are an unstoppable force. If you're a fan of good, fast rock and roll, you HAVE to give B'z a try!
