Unlicensed NES Games

We have all seen unlicensed Nintendo games...believe it or not. They're everywhere. Maybe it was that copy of Klax you played at your friends house. And then there was the pale blue cart which looked really odd. Anyway, unlicensed Nintendo games tend to be slightly rarer to obtain than regular NES carts are. Why? Unlicensed Nintendo games were released in smaller quantities.

There were several unlicensed game companies around...and most of them were based in America! That's really cool for me cuz these games were produced on my home turf. In the following section, there is a list of the main unlicensed companies and specific information is available about each by clicking on their respective symbols.

Color Dreams (my favorite unlicensed NES company btw) was founded in 1989 by Dan Lawton and Eddie Lin, two dudes who reverse-engineered the Nintendo Entertainment System. They didn't get an official license from Nintendo because of money and quantity reasons. Another reason was who would pay for a license when they go the stuff to make a game on their own? Color Dreams released multiple games under their Color Dreams logo and plenty under their Wisdom Tree logo too. A very cool company with a unique place in NES history.

American Game Carts Inc. bought the rights to most of the Exidy game titles which were quite popular in the arcades. With games such as Chiller, a quite popular zapper game, Shockwave, a space game, and Deathrace, a racer which caused lots of controversy in the arcades, American Game Carts had what it took but why...
