Keswick Country House Hotel 1

An exterior view of the main entrance of the Keswick Country House Hotel. The Keswick Country House Hotel, in Keswick on Derwentwater in Cumbria, is a grand Victorian hulk with gardens on one side and an old station on the other. The views of the Latrigg and Skiddaw mountains are wonderful – ask for a top-floor front room.
An exterior view of the back of the Keswick Country House Hotel. If you're lucky, you'll get an un-modernized room with a clawfoot tub big enough for you and several friends. I spent an embarassing amount of time in the tub with the window open, savouring gambolling spring lambs and mountains shadowed by passing clouds and Glenmorangie.
A view of the Keswick Country House Hotel gardens. The four acres of gardens are over-tended, in my opinion. Even allowing for early Spring bleakness, the park has a stark, unwelcoming feel to it.
A view of the Keswick Country House Hotel garden walk. There are a few areas, though, where this Victorian garden can hold up its head with pride, where vistors can tuck themselves beside the beaten path and wait for a bustle or a top hat to pass by.
