Can't Say Why I Love You

Chapter Thirty-Three

Katie smiled and walked out of Kevin's room, down the hall, and into the waiting room, where A.J. was just leaving. "A.J.!" she called.

He turned around. "Oh, there you are. I was looking for you."

"Yeah, Brian told me," Katie said, not quite looking into his eyes.

"Well...wanna take a walk?" A.J. suggested, grinning.

She didn't return the smile. "Sure."

The two of them started to walk down the long corridor of the hospital.

"I know what you're going to say, A.J.," Katie said.

He looked at the floor. "Oh..." He turned his eyes back towards her. "Can I say it anyway?"

Katie shrugged. "No one's stopping you."

A.J. took a deep breath. "Katie, I really mean what I've been telling you. I love you."

Katie turned to him with a touch of anger in her eyes. "A.J., that's not fair."

"What?"

"You think that just because you did something for my brother, I'll automatically forgive you for hurting me. That's not how it works. I'm still mad at you."

A.J. looked at her in surprise. "That's not what I was insinuating at all," he said, smiling.

"Oh, I'm sorry..." Katie apologized, blushing.

A.J. grinned. "That's okay." She looked up at him expectantly. "Oh, right. What I really meant. Okay, I know that I made a mistake, and I'm sorry."

"You said that already," Katie muttered under her breath, not realizing that he heard her.

A.J. stopped walking and lightly grabbed her arms. "I also know that you've been finding it hard to trust my words lately. So maybe you can trust something else."

Katie raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?" she asked suspiciously.

A.J. pushed a stray strand of dark brown hair out of her face and tucked it carefully behind her ear, making her heart beat faster as his deep brown eyes met hers. "Let me kiss you," he murmured.

Katie started to breathe faster at the thought of being so close to him. "A.J., I don't think that's a good idea."

"Please, Katie," A.J. begged. "If this doesn't show you that I love you, then I don't know what will," he whispered, and she was surprised to see tears forming in his eyes. "Please?" A.J. said again.

Katie bit her lip and slowly nodded.

A.J. smiled. "Close your eyes and give me your hands," he whispered.

Katie hesitated.

"Trust me, Katie," A.J. said.

She sighed and did as she was told. A.J. gently took her hands and stepped closer to her so that he could wrap them around his waist. He breathed deeply and placed one hand on the back of her neck and the other on her cheek. Then he slowly moved forward for the kiss. Katie held back a gasp as his lips brushed up against hers so that they were just barely touching. She found herself unconsciously moving closer to him and parting her lips slightly. A.J. took this as a sign and transformed the kiss from one of loving tenderness to one of burning passion, slipping his tongue past her lips and into her mouth. He moved his hands so that he could pull her body up against his own. When the kiss was finally over, Katie could hardly breathe.

"Alex, I...I..." she gasped, looking away and feeling hot tears burning the backs of her eyes. He looked to her patiently, and she smiled. "I love you too."

A.J.'s eyebrows shot up, and he laughed out loud out of pure happiness. "Really? You mean it?" he asked, taking her hand in his.

She nodded. "Of course I love you, A.J. I always have, and I always will," she whispered as the tears started to fall. A.J. choked back a sob and pulled her close to him again.

"Shh, baby, it's okay...I'm here, and I'll never leave you again," he mumbled into her hair. He tightened his arms around her and closed his eyes as he began to softly sing her favorite song, surprised at how well the lyrics fit.

"When we turned out the lights,
The two of us alone together,
Something's just not right.
But girl you know that I would never
Ever let another's touch
Come between the two of us.
Cause no one else will ever take your place.

"No one else comes close to you,
No one makes me feel the way you do.
You're so special, girl, to me,
And you'll always be eternally.
Every time I hold you near,
You always say the words I long to hear.
Girl, with just a touch, you can do so much.
No one else comes close."

By now the tears were trickling down A.J.'s face, and he had to stop, so Katie picked it up for him.

"And when I wake up to
The touch of your head on my shoulder
You're a dream come true
And you know I'll always treasure
Every kiss, and every day
I love you, in every way
And I always will 'cause in my eyes, ooh baby..."

People were watching them now, but neither of them cared as A.J. joined her to sing the chorus.

"No one else comes close to you,
No one makes me feel the way you do.
You're so special (girl) to me,
And you'll always be eternally."

A.J. switched to the harmony on the last lines.

"Every time I hold you near,
You always say the words I love to hear,
(Girl) with just a touch, you can do so much,
No one else comes clo-ose."

They ended the song softly, and Katie turned red and playfully buried her head in A.J.'s chest as the people around them, including the other Boys minus Kevin, applauded. A.J. held her like that until the people had walked away, and A.J. had glared at Brian, Nick, and Howie until they laughed and left.

"They're all gone now. You can come out," he whispered, making her laugh.

"What if I don't want to?" she said, not lifting her head as she breathed in his scent.

"Then don't," A.J. said, stroking her hair.

Katie let out a murmur of approval as he kissed the top of her head. She looked up at him with hunger in her eyes. "G-d, I want you," she whispered, running a hand over A.J.'s chest.

He grinned and took her hand, hurrying towards the waiting room. "Hey, we're leaving, give my regards to Kevin!" he said to his friends, hardly even looking at them as he pushed a laughing Katie ahead of him and steered her towards the door while Brian, Nick, and Howie fell about laughing.

"Bye guys!" Katie called over her shoulder.

She and A.J. broke into a run until they got to Howie's car. He opened the door to let her in the passenger seat and got in after her, sitting on top of her and straddling her as the two of them kept kissing.

"A.J.," Katie said between kisses as she felt him become aroused, "I don't think Howie would appreciate it very much if we fucked in his car."

A.J. laughed and reluctantly got off of her. "I have a feeling that we're going to be breaking all of the speed limits," he said as he pulled out Howie's keys and started the car.

Katie laughed. "Now, there's no need for that," she said as she put her hand on his knee. "We can have fun right here too," she murmured, sliding her hand up his leg.

A.J. swallowed hard. "Katie, please..."

She laughed. "What's the matter? Can't handle a tease?"

He grinned. "No, it's just that I don't want to get into an accident," he explained.

Katie sighed, realizing that he was right, and pulled her hand away.

"Hey, did I say stop?" A.J. asked glancing over at her.

"No, but—"

"Here comes a red light," he said, stopping the car and turning to her. She smiled and kissed him.
