Costello's Orchard
Childhood dreams were lived in a moment.
Playing baseball is how we spent
our days in Costello's orchard. We
hoped we'd hit a home run, then sneak
some cherries from the trees as we went
to retrieve the ball. That's what we meant
to do, but the click a portent--
Old Man Costello was aiming free.
Childhood dreams were lived
looking down the gun. His intent
was clear as the shotgun blasts sent
rock salt flying throughout the trees
and we ran and laughed, screamed if we
fell victim. Then on our way we went
as childhood dreams were lived.
