at age six...
at age six, i always drew the same thing:
square house with a triangle roof
(sometimes i felt artistic and i’d even add
a window or two), a green blob
i called a tree, with the sun shining from
the corner of the page; a bird
in the shape of a V, and the blue sky reaching
all the way down to the grass.
But now I’ve grown up. Graduated high school,
college, married -- I draw new pictures;
the house not just a square anymore,
evergreens visible outside
through the bay window,
while blue jays and orioles peck
at the feeder.
but sometimes i wish i could go back,
be able to call a green blob a tree,
and touch the sky while standing on the grass.
