Viva Las Vegas

What comes to mind when one hears the words, “Las Vegas?” Hookers? Gambling? Wild parties? Getting married? CSI? Everyone would be right on those words. Here’s a new one for you: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Yes, that is right. In 1971, the late Hunter S. Thompson wrote about a crazy Las Vegas, Nevada adventure of Raoul Duke, a reporter, and his attorney, Dr. Gonzo. Now, Fear and Loathing is not a clean little kiddy book. Oh no! That wouldn’t be fun at all. All stories based in Vegas have got to have some sort of wild deviant behavior of some sort. What did Thompson have for the readers in the book? Why none other than drugs! The illustrations in the book look like Thompson himself was high when he wrote the book. They just look that creepy. Even the first chapter opens the reader up to the wild drug ride. Duke says, “And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas.” (Pg. 3) It starts like the acid trip as started already. It makes me want to keep on reading. I might use this book for inspiration for my own writing one day.
