Stella!!!!

Desire Streetcar Named Desire is a timeless classic. Marlon Brando made it iconic with his portrayal of Stanly Kowalski. However, Stanly is not the only main character in the book. Blanche DuBois is another important character to the play/movie. These two are put head-to-head with each other. This conflict comes in the forms of personality, background, and family ties. Blanche comes from a rich Southern background. She may be very elegant, but the woman is very unstable as well. She shows that in the opening scenes of the play. Blanche thought that her younger sister, Stella, was angry with her about losing their home. Plus, Blanche breaks down all too easily. Stanly, on the other hand, has his own problems as well. He may have it all together, but he has a short-fuse tempter. In the first scene, Stanly starts a fight in a bowling alley with some men. It does not end there. He is highly violent towards Blanche and Stella when he is angry. He got aggressive with Blanche just for talking about his astrological sign. In fact, it can be said that Stella is a victim of domestic violence. However despite Blanche’s pleas, Stella won’t leave Stanly. She is crazy about him and is carrying his child. In fact, when Stella says in great afterglow, “He smashed all the light bulbs with the heel of my slipper! [She laughs.]” (Scene Four, Pg. 2211), that really worries Blanche. However, I sense a little bit of sexual tension between Blanche and Stanly. I keep expecting something hot to happen between them. Maybe it will, I’ll just have to keep watching/reading.
