Stella!!!! (Pt. 2)

Alas, the grim yet sexy story comes to an end. Just as the reader could predict, Blanche had a rough ending. Stanly had it in for her from the beginning. He never wanted her there in the beginning. The man tried to come up with a plan to get rid of her. One day, a traveling salesman comes to the car shop where Stanly works and spills some dirt about the delusional Southern belle. Armed with some damaging evidence, the charming monster goes to Mitch and tells the truth. From there, the relationship between Mitch and Blanche goes cold. Not only does Blanche lose her man, she really loses her mind after Stanley rapes her while Stella is having a baby. In the end, Blanche is taken away to a mental hospital. Now, this is where the play and movie really separate. In the movie, Stella takes the baby and leaves Stanley after Blanche is taken away. In the play however, “Stanley: [voluptuously, soothingly] Now, honey. Now, love. Now, now, love. [He kneels beside her and his fingers find the opening of her blouse.] Now, now, love, Now love…” (Act eleven, Pg. 2248) Stella goes back to Stanley in the end. Why is that? In the 50’s, there were strict codes for movies. Hollywood felt it was wrong to reward abuse, so they changed the ending to where Stella and the baby leave Stanley. I can take it, I guess…
