Introduction   Integration of CoT
What Is CoT?

CoT provides the integration demanding by the fighting forces of today.  This technology provides the mechanism for machines operating a variety of software to communicate with each other, passing vital information in a timely manner.  Currently, according the Mitre, CoT is fielded in over 10 different systems with an additional 90 projects in the developmental or prototype stage.  CoT is currently being used by AFSOC and various other units operating in Afghanistan and Iraq.  Falcon View, Link 16, ADOCS (Automated Deep Operations Coordination System), and DPSS (Diode Pumped solide State) Laser are just a few of the commonly used programs using CoT today.  For a complete listing of programs, contact the Mitre Corporation.

The integration CoT provides the war fighters and their commanders is invaluable.  This system allows the sharing of critical information like troop positions, target coordinates, and associated information for successful targeting.  Commanders can instantly gain awareness on the battle field that in the past took several translations through radio communications or electronic chat sites.  This new capability enhances the situational awareness of everyone on the network.  The ability of an AC-130 gunship to electronically 'see' the position of the friendlies in relation to the target enhances the confidence of the aircrew and provides an added measure of safety to the situation.

CoT has allowed Air Force Special Operations forces to reduce their time-sensitive target chain from 30 to less than eight minutes. Nearly 100 military communications systems worldwide are developing CoT, and it has even been deployed in multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, so they can "talk" with other command and control systems. CoT is now being looked at to help combat terrorism, for counter IED (Improvised Explosive Device) applications.
