"In
describing genetic
mechanisms, there is a choice between being inexact and
incomprehensible".
-J. Monod
Jacques
Monod was quoted having described
genetic mechanisms thus by Professor Sven Gard, member of the Nobel
Committee for Physiology or Medicine of the Royal Caroline Institute
when giving his speech before Professors Jacob, Lwoff and Monod were to
receive the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for "discoveries
concerning the genetic regulation of enzyme and virus synthesis."
He said further, that he would try to be as inexact as his conscience
would allow. In the following pages, we shall be trying the
same.
