John W. Goelz was born in Zanesville, Ohio...
He went to Saint Thomas Catholic School...
He was wounded in the Pacific during WW2 and awarded the Purple Heart...
He was a Journeyman Meatcutter...
He was a Family Man and Father of 5 Children...
He was also Stepfather to 4 Children with his 2nd Wife...
Moved to Florida and Retired there...

John enjoyed the outdoors and went hunting and fishing as often as possible...
Here are some stories about John and his adventures...
PROM...

Well John aquired this dog he named Prom...
It was a bird dog... It turned into a great bird dog...

Prom would suddenly freeze looking at a bunch of weeds
with his tail pointing straight back...
Then John would say charge (or something) and Prom would jump into the weeds
and out would fly a pheasant or rabbit or covy of Quail...
John had phennoma success hunting with his dog Prom...

Well John always had trouble in the beginning getting Prom
to get into the car to go home...
Well one day he took a fishing pole he had in the trunk of the car
and put a piece of meat on the hook from one of the rabbits he had gutted...
Then he reeled the bait thru the back seat of the car then
shut the door and ran around the car and shut the other door
with Prom trapped in the rear seat...

Deerhunting...

So John used to go Deerhunting in Ohio with a bow an arrow...
One winter afternoon John went hunting deer, trudging thru snow and across farm fields...
Haveing no luck he headed back towards the car, tired and hungry...
Well after crossing this fence and starting down a small hill
he lost his balance and fell down...
John layed there in the snow resting and catching his breath...
However he fell asleep there in the snow...
When he woke up it was dark out... At first he wasn't sure where the car was...
But soon with the light the snow reflects he got his bearings and went on to his car...
John said that it was a real shock though when he first woke up...

I remember John telling me about one day when he went deer hunting...
Seems he watched for tracks and spore etc...
And he pretty much knew where the deer came and went in their daily lives...
So like so often before he waited in the early dawn in a favorite spot
waiting for the deer to show up...
Well as luck would have it a big buck, with so many points on his antlers,
shows up...
As John stood there with his bow and arrow ready the deer slowly
walked up so near to him that John was afraid the deer would hear his breathing...
Now at the moment John had waited for for so long...
He pulled back the string of the bow, ready to let the razor sharp arrow pierce the flesh
of this magnificant animal...
John said he just couldn't do it...
Finally after what seemed like a long time the deer slowly warndered away
never knowing that John had finally WON...
Think that was a lesson for me as well because today and much older
now I wouldn't have the heart to kill an animal so beautiful and made by GOD...

Fishing

Well one evening when I was about 10 or so, John said, "Would you like to go fishing in the morning?"

Well I said sure... So in the morning we gathered the fishing gear and headed out to lake seneca in Ohio.... Back then the roads were mostly 2 lane highways and many dirt backroads.... So about 1/2 way to Seneca lake we came across a bridge and a small creek.... So Dad said lets check this out.... So we parked the car and walked along the creek till there was a large pool at a bend in the creek.... Dad was using a fly rod and began casting out into the large pool there.... Well after a few casts a big sunfish hit the fly and so some fantastic fishing began there....

I baited the hook with a worm and thru it into the water.... The bobber no sooner settled down then under it went and a fish was set onto the hook... I think it wqas mostly small mouth bass and sunfish there in that creek.... Anyway one sunfish, a Pumpkinseed, was a giant and would fil the bottom of a small skillet.... So finally we left not wanting to miss the day at the lake....

After we arrived at Lake Seneca we found a spot and caught many, many crappies that day.... These are small but good eating.... So there were enough to feed everyone by the time we left.... It had been a fun day and so tired we left for home as the sun started to set in the west.... Now going home on this 2 lane highway was a long trip.... The car was a plymouth coup... Meaning it juat had the front seats in it.... So as we rode along we kept coming up behind cars and then passing them when it was clear to do so.... There seemed to be car after car to pass.... Wanting to get home and eat and sleep etc, Dad said do you want me to pass this one.... And I would get excited and yell, ((( YES ))).... And so on.... So I'am yelling yes, lets pas this one too ha ha.... All the way home....

Anyway we got home safely and everything was ok.... Was an exciting trip and the fishing was great.... Today with more traffic and everything maybe passing all the other cars wouldn't be such a good idea.... Anyway that was one of our adventures.... Wearn't many but enough to remember Dad and the great outdoors.... Until I think of another story ... O(^__^)O

The Woods

Well there was a lot of trees on the side of this big hill along the road to town.... Some of these big trees were hickery trees a good place for squirells.... Dad use to stop there often during hunting season to get a squirell or just get away from the road and everything....

It is quiet up there in the woods.... You can hear the wind rustling the leaves on the trees.... And then you will hear or see some squirells playing or eating if you've been quiet for awhile... The trees are very tall too.... The red squirells are larger and more preferred than the grey squirell... All in all it is a nice serene place to enjoy the quiet of a summers moment in a shag bark hickory woods....

Well I just got my 1st photo's of John from years ago... Maybe more later....? Here is John and His wife Jeanne at their daughters Prom....

This is John and Jeanne back in 1963 at the Lexington High School Prom which they helped chaperone...
And John dancing with daughter, Therese at same Prom...
Interestingly I got these pictures of the 1963 Prom and there's the story of their dog also named Prom...
Will write more later on...
