I started writing poetry when I was about 14. It was a way to express feelings that I had a hard time saying otherwise.
In High School, one of my teacher's got upset because I won't follow any set patterns. I kinda make them up as I go. If you read some of them carefully, you might be able to pick out some that I made up. Not all of them have one. I have found free verse is so much more expressive, at least for me. I write for the meaning, not for how many lines there are or how it rhymes. If it means something to me that is good enough.
These were written all in about a week or so. I had just broke up with a boyfriend and was feeling kinda low. Actually kinda isn't the word. =)

The Love Tree

If this is love
maybe I don't want to be
up in this tree.

Its easy to get in
but hard to get out
when it ends in a bout.

The leaves are blinding
sometimes binding
of where you will be.

You can't always see
when you get in the tree
on which branch you will be.

Some of the branches
are smooth and soft
some are rough and tough.

This tree is not for fear
of heights or of tears
because they are both up there.

If you are in the tree
alone you won't be
because you will be with me.

In Your Eyes

Why can't I believe
what I see
in your eyes?

Your eyes tell me
what I want to hear
what you won't say

You won't say
how you feel
You leave me in the dark.

In the dark I will stay
because you won't say
what your eyes betray

What you do to me

I can't concentrate
my mind wonders to
places reality can't penitrate
It's almost as if my
life is about to liquidate
Like a balloon
about to deflate
Why can't you relate
to me on this date?
