FOR PARENTS: We encourage parents to consult with educators and other professionals who know their child before determining whether the child has a serious learning issue and if so how it should be addressed. The first steps, as discussed on the Assessment Page, should be to pursue testing through your local school district and to follow up on whatever suggestions may be forthcoming from that meeting. You may be able to influence the school district to provide services not available in the school setting, such as outside educational therapy, occupational therapy, technological assistance, etc. if you can show that these services are crucial to the child's educational progress and they are unable to provide them. Be aware that it will most likely be an uphill battle, as districts obviously do not like to pay, or set a precedent for paying, for expensive services from outside professionals. If you are determined enough you may succeed, but we strongly recommend you retain the services of a professional advocate or special education lawyer, if you decide to pursue this course. There are many places where you can get the names of good professionals in your area, the best source being a personal referral from another satisfied parent. Sometimes the school will give you the names of people they have worked with, but they will not usually tell you much detailed information about them. You could also try posting a specific question to one of the bulletin boards, such as those on LDOnline and International Dyslexia Society (IDA), the addresses are www.ldonline.org and http://www.interdys.org respectively. In addition, check www.lblp.com and Chris Balke's website, linked above (East Coast) for more listings of Lindamood-Bell TM program providers around the country. Of course, we cannot guarantee the quality of any of the above providers, so use caution when investigating your options: ask for in-house or published research, ask about training and experience, ask for parent and professional referrals and follow-up on them, etc. You want to make sure the person you hire has the training and experience to do the job right, otherwise you may as well go and get the training yourself, which should not be ruled out as an option, if you have the desire and the need!
