Triceratops ("three horned face") is probably the best known of the ceratopsian family with is large neck frill of solid bone, three characteristic horns and parrot-like beak. The animal apparently ate tough, low plants. Its beak had no front teeth, but its cheek molars were well designed for cutting and grinding tough plant material. Although a plant eater, its formidable defenses and large powerful body (16,000 lbs / 7200 kg) would have made it a difficult target for even the largest Cretaceous predators such as Tyrannosaurus Rex that roamed the in-land plains 70 million years ago. Good fossils have been found in North America and show that the Triceratops grew to over 25 feet (7 meters) in length and stood around 9 feet (2.4 meters) high at the hips
