A Different ComFest FAQ

Why I quit the ComFest

The power of the Committee Heads

Appreciation of my contributions

This page used to have a ComFest FAQ that answered some question from my perspective as a long-time member. If you googled here looking for ComFest info, the official website - www.comfest.com - has the answers to most questions. I'm not a member now, please use the contact page in that website to get info about the electric system at ComFest.

Appreciation of my contributions

Somehow this part of the whole deal has gotten more focus than I ever intended.

Yes, I thought I was under appreciated. But I don't think I was any more under appreciated than a good number of the people who make ComFest happen. ComFest is not much different that any other organization, those who make the most noise about their efforts get the attention, those who do the work without complaint are generally ignored. Human nature - nothing new.

I didn't do the work for ComFest as a way to get my name in the program. Community service, as I see it, should be for the good of the community, not to have your ego stroked. If anyone would have suggested that I should be in the program with a "honored volunteer" profile, I would have said, thank you, no.

Don't get me wrong, I had my turn to be the star of the program. In '96 I had the cover photo, a full-page review of the main act, and was also the acting "head organizer" of the ComFest (until the fest started, then I was the head of the electric crew again.). I'm not shy about getting attention. I just want my work to get the attention, not my ego.

In '02, I worked harder than I have even worked on the fest. Almost all of the electrical system was replaced with newly constructed equipment. The configuration of the fest changed so every bit of the equipment had to be re-configured. At the last minute the city came up with new rules and inspections that took more time. Frankly it was a miracle that the whole thing was up and running (with some outages). The only message I got from fellow ComFesters was "you screwed up this year, don't let it happen again".

I didn't expect flowers, but I did hope someone would notice the work.

Volunteering for the good of the community has been always been a win-win for me. I leave the ComFest a better person, with more friends. I wish nothing but good luck and more success to the ComFest.
