A Different ComFest FAQ

Why I quit the ComFest

The power of the Committee Heads

Appreciation of my contributions

This page used to have a ComFest FAQ that answered some question from my perspective as a long-time member. If you googled here looking for ComFest info, the official website - www.comfest.com - has the answers to most questions. I'm not a member now, please use the contact page in that website to get info about the electric system at ComFest.

The power of the Committee Heads

As a committee head myself, I appreciated the power that the general committee gave me. The general committee doesn't have the time or experience to vote on the many details that need approved on the committee level.

Unfortunately, the committee system often works nothing like the consensus process that is part of the articles of incorporation.

Expanding the Festival was always contingent on the will of the committee heads. They are the ones that have to fulfill the demands of new stages or street fair booths, which works fine as long as there is space to expand. Through the process of expansion the committee heads have taken control of the decision process. They might see the general committee as having an advisory role, but I'm sure they will admit that they are the real arbiters of the size of the ComFest.

In order to convince the ComFest to cut the size of the stages and the street fair, I need to convince the members of the general committee, which may be possible. But if the heads of the entertainment committee, the beer committee, and Candy don't agree that cutting the fest is for the best in the long term, my proposal has little chance. Since cutting the size of the fest is not to their advantage, my proposal will probably go nowhere.

Until the ComFest devises a way to make the committees work as a whole, instead of as independent fiefdoms, the concept of the ComFest being a collaborative, consensus based group will be unfulfilled.
