Chapter History
On March 24, 1984, two women in the New Haven area, Soror Delilah Gomes and Soror Mattie Long, inspired by the legacy of the founders of our beloved Delta Sigma Theta, met and established the Pi Alpha Chapter. Pi Alpha was the first undergraduate chapter of Black Greek-letter organizations for women chartered in the New Haven area.
Upon its inception, thirteen intelligent, service-oriented women from Southern Connecticut State University and Yale University joined Pi Alpha and continued Delta’s legacy of sisterhood, scholarship and public service. Since then, Pi Alpha has opened her arms to embrace like-minded women from Albertus Magnus College, the University of New Haven, and Wesleyan University, in addition to the two charter schools.
Throughout the years, Pi Alpha members have been dedicated to the ideals and principles of our glorious sisterhood. They continue to give their time and talents to numerous exemplary public service activities, such as Habitat for Humanity, where Delta was the first black organization to forge a partnership. Other community efforts include St. Thomas Mores Soup Kitchen, Adopt-a-Classroom, and the international reading program, Crimson Corner. |
