A Rough Couple of Years
Zak Blak, AKA Panda Mask

I don't know about any of you guys, but I feel a little worn out from all the crazy things happening in wrestling, especially in the past two years.

I think the craziest thing is going from three great promotions to just one. A lot of what gave me hope, and revitalization in wrestling was ECW. They brought the smaller guys, who were quicker and just better to the states. They set a whole new style for wrestling and brought it truly to a new level.

Next WCW folds within a month of ECW. A very disfucntional organization indeed, but they had brought so much to the table. They popularized the Cruiserweight division. Gave major pushes to guys like Lance Storm. Brought in the concept of the nWo. It showed Hulk Hogan's greed and undisciple. They gave me the best matches of my youth with the Four Horsemen destroying Dusty Rhodes. They brought up guys from Verne Gagne's AWA like the Road Warriors. They gave us Raven's Flock, some of Russo's funnier storylines like the Filthy Animals, ring technicians got airtime like Fit Finlay, And they took the cruiserweights to a new level with the Cruiserweight tag belts. And who could for get the awesomeness of La Parka?!?!

And the worst part of those, is seeing BOTH federations completely pissed upon for Vince McMahon's ego. When Austin pissed on Arn Anderson, it almost proved as a great allegory to how the WWE thought of WCW. And ECW isn't even acknowledged. I knew they were gonna fuck up that Invasion crap when the ECW sided with WCW. After all the shoots on 'Uncle Eric' they thought we'd swallow that?!?!

Chief Wahoo, Lou Thesz, Big Dick Dudley, and Davey Boy Smith all passed away this year. Not to mention two of my favorites Rick Rude, and Owen Hart passed on a few years ago.

We've lost the talents of Mick Foley, the Rock, Bret Hart, and now Steve Austin in the wrestling world. Not to mention two of my favorites Dean Malenko, and Fit Finlay had to retire in the past few years. Dean really made me appreciate wrestling again when I was in Japan in the early 90s. Watching him in Japan gave me hope again, and now that's in the pisser.

Being disillusioned *again* with the WWE and having NO alternative like WCW and ECW to turn to has really sucked. I've been looking for anything to satisfy my need of good wrestling with storylines. WWA has put on ONE good show, and the NWA is back. Both have promise, but still...who knows...

Its sad when the best storylines come from my N64 and Gamecube games.

But I think the worst part (at least to me) was seeing Bobby Heenan on Confidential the other night. He looked so thin and frail...They say he has an 80% chance...but still, for a guy I grew up with, that was really an eye opener.

So when you add all of that crap up, it gets pretty annoying, and a bummer. Man, praise heaven that comics are going through a virtual renaissance. At least there's good stuff to read.
