I had been able with great luck to extend the lineage back a couple of generations, with many interconnections with other families. These included the Cobles, the Atkins, the Shoulders, the Hubbs, the Kellams and the Denbos of Southern Indiana. Many of these families came to the Indian Territory of Oklahoma around the turn of the century. The first of these to come to the Indian Territory was Joseph Asbury Denbo, the son of Jacob Denbo and Miriah Grant. After the Civil War, Joseph Denbo had returned home to his family. By 1869 He and His wife were seeking a separation, and a quarrel arose as to who should have custody of the children. A gun battle occurred between the relatives of Joseph Denbo and The Smith Family related to Arena Smith his first wife. On Joseph’s side of the dispute was Washington Atkins that had married Leanna Denbo the sister of Joseph A. Denbo. As well as Wesley Shoulders that had married Mary Denbo another sister of Joseph A. Denbo. Fighting for Arena Smith, was her Father George Smith and brother Alfred Smith. Alfred Smith was killed in the gun fight. Joseph A. Denbo was wounded. Both Washington Atkins and Wesley Shoulders were tried for murder and both were acquitted. (An account of this gunfight can be found in the History of Orange County Indiana.) Joseph A. Denbo left Indiana and went to the Indian Territory of Oklahoma. By 1870 He had married Letitia Victoria Keyes. She was a Cherokee Lady of Catoosa Oklahoma. His first wife Arena received custody of the children. Sometime before Joseph Denbo left Indiana, he lost a medal received in the Civil War. It was found in the year 1919 by a young girl,In a field that her father was plowing. She kept the medal for nearly fifty years. While visiting her Grandchildren and relating the story of finding the medal they all wondered about the man to whom it had originally belonged. They contacted the archives of Indiana and were conducted to the family records of the Denbo family that they had placed on microfilm. These were the very same records that I had sent to Lilian Doane in my research so that she might place them in the county library in Indiana. By chance State officials had been at the Library and microfilmed them while there. It was this unusual set of circumstances that led them to find the descendants of Joseph A. Denbo in Rogers County Oklahoma. Contact was made by phone, and the medal was returned to John Denbo a grandson of Joseph A. Denbo. Nearly fifty years after it had been lost, it found its way home.
