Tucker Family Genealogy Of the descendants of Jacob Tucker By Mack Tucker While vacationing at the home of the father (a son of Enoch Tucker) of the writer (Mack Tucker) in 1922, asked the question, “Why did your father come to Indiana?” After it was asked, The answer was “Uncle Jake, Uncle Bill and Uncle John were already over here. This lead to the research on the family group from which the following research and genealogy resulted. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX In the discussion which followed certain names of the group were mentioned as first or second cousins and that there were three other aunts, the wife of Larken Lankford being (Rachael Tucker), Mrs Joseph Denbo being (Elizabeth Tucker) and (Polly Tucker) the wife of Peter Newton. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX In discussing the family of Larken Lankford with Martha Jane (Tince) Lankford it developed that Alcy Tucker married Larken Lankford after the death of Tince’s grandmother, Rachael Tucker. There were no children to the marriage of Larken and Alcy. By referring to the marriage records of Shelby County Kentucky, It was found that Rachael Tucker was married to Larken Lankford on Jan.26,1797 and that the bondsman was Jacob Tucker,(father of Rachael) the witness was William Tucker, and the attorney was William Logan. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX By referring to the tax records for 1794 it was found that Jacob Tucker had three sons, varying in ages from 11 to 20. The fact that the grandfather (Enoch Tucker) of the writer was born in 1795 makes clear that the three sons referred to were Jacob William and John. From facts that do not appear here it is certain that the witness was a brother and not a son of Jacob Tucker. The tax report for the 1795 Tax Book of Shelby County, Kentucky, shows that he had one free white male over 21 years of age and male over 16 but under 21. No mention is made of the one 12 years of age, or of the baby if then born at that time. The tax record for 1796 did not mention the children but did mention that Jacob was taxed for 310 acres of land on Brashears Creek. This was purchased in 1795 and sold in 1804. The location is near Finchville Kentucky. The land was sold in two parts of 155 acres each. It is to be noted that the deeds were not signed by a wife and acknowledged by four witnesses. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Collins History of Kentucky, Vol. 2, page 767 mentions Jacob Tucker in connection with the defence of the region in a part as follows: “And the most active and reliable men in the defence of the North Elkhorn frontier, the settlement at the main forks of Elkhorn, those of Frankfort and its immediate neighborhood, were Col. John K. Grant, and Capt. Samuel Grant, with their brothers: Major Thomas Herndon and Jacob Tucker; the late Col. James Johnson and Capt. Lucket, as they grew up: Capt. Nathaniel Sanders, Capt. A. Bart. Capt. Pemberton (the late Gen. Bennett Pemberton) and William Hayden and sons. On the Elkhorn below the forks, old Mr. Church and sons, Jeremiah Craig, and others distinguished themselves by their bravery and zeal.” In the same History it appears that the last Indian raid of that part of the Commonwealth was on Sunday before election day in 1792, at which date the Indians were driven north of the Ohio River. From the foregoing it is certain that Jacob Tucker came to Kentucky between 1774, the first settlement, and the year 1792. It is certain that he settled in Shelby county by 1794. Tradition has it that Jacob Tucker is buried in the Denbo Cemetery, west of William H. English park in English Indiana, the county seat of Crawford Co. Indiana. It is more than likely that it is his wife instead of him. In 1820 there was a woman of her age with Joseph Denbo and wife Elizabeth Tucker. In 1830 there was a woman of her age with William Tucker. Further light is shed on the history from the tax reports just referred to. In 1794, Jacob Tucker had eleven slaves. In 1795 he had one slave, 2 horses and 11 head of cattle. In 1796 he had one slave, 3 horses, and 8 head of cattle. The land was purchased from Ezekiel Newland and Millie his wife, on November 14,1795 for 98 pounds sterling. He deeded one parcel of 155 acres to Edmund Cura for 150 pounds sterling and another parcel of 155 acres to H. B. Kerrick for 120 pounds sterling. These transactions were made on March 5th ,1804. He alone signed the deeds and they were acknowledged by Edmund , Samuel, Edmund Sr. and Spencer Cura. ( it will be noted that Jacob Tucker’s wife was blind and a very small woman.) XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX The grandfather of the writer (Enoch Tucker) brought his family to Indiana passing through Hartford (Now English Indiana) on election day in 1840. According to Freeman Tucker they came from Beckenridge County Kentucky. In 1941 Freeman Tucker gave to Charles W. Tucker a chair that was brought with them from Kentucky. This chair was burned on Aug. 17,1941. These statements were made at the time the chair was given. William moved his family to Calhoun County Kentucky. He had several children, among them was Allen born 1802. In 1936 the writer called on the son Calvin, who was then well up in the 90's. The writer received all the names of the children of William Tucker. These appear later on. For further research::: There were other Tuckers in Shelby County Kentucky , at the time. Peter tucker was taxed in 1795, on 8 head of cattle and in 1796 on one horse and 7 head of cattle. John tucker was a party to a marriage bond for Elizabeth Tucker and Jon Gott on March 25,1805. Married first Mary Hail, the date is in question. Second Marriage was to Sarah Murphy on May 2,1828. (Crawford Co. Indiana) William Tucker was probably born in Virginia, now West Virginia. Tax records of Shelby Co. Kentucky show him to be between 16 and 21 in 1795. And the census of 1830 showed him to be between 50 and 60 years old. Wife between 30 and 50. No record shows the second wife to be a widow but her son was buried on the Samuel M. (Doc) Tucker farm, northwest of Taswell. They deeded land to the Lankfords April 20,1838. Abstract stating Sarah was examined separate and apart from William and relinquished right of dowery in land. Samuel M. Tucker remembered going to his grandfathers to eat chinquapins that the old man had gathered. A woman between 70 and 80 was with him in 1830. Probably his mother who lived to be a 110 years of age. Neither were alive in 1850. One child of William was born in Kentucky. One child was born in Tennessee, and the last was born in Indiana. Indiana, to Edmund Lankford, born about 1803. Edmund died about 1883. Nancy Tucker second marriage was to Jonathan Enlow. In the 1840 Federal Census, Edmond indicates he is 38 years old. Nancy is about 33 years old. They have two girls under the age of 5 years, who are Mary Ann and Elizabeth, two girls, Rachael and an unknown girl, and one boy, William, in the 5-10 years old range, and perhaps a hired hand in the 20 year old male category living with them. The Federal Census for Patoka Township in 1860 indicates Edmond is now 59 years old, and Nancy is 54. William, at 25 years old is out of the house and is a resident farm hand. Mary Ann is 23, Elizabeth, at 21 years old is out of the home, Larkin is 17, Henry is 15, Nancy is 13, Eliza is 10, James is 8, and Catherine is 5 years old. Edmond's real and personal estate is $1, 263. In 1870, the Federal Census lists Edmond as 69 years old, and Nancy as 64. Living at home is their daughter, Nancy, 23, James, 19, and Catherine, 15. They are farmers, and their real and personal estate is $5,500. Their son Larkin, and wife Sarah live on the next farm. In 1880, the Federal Census lists Edmond, 79, and Nancy, 74, as living alone. They are farmers. It is believed that soon after this time they have died. They are no longer listed in the census records. According to the census reports, Nancy and Edmond did not seperate or divorce. She would have been married Jonathan at age 77 if she would have married immediately, and would have been married to him for under 10 years before her death. a marriage entry for Crawford County Indiana: Nancy Lankford married Jonathan P. Enlow in 1883 (the year Edmond Lankford died!) Who would have guessed!"Jonathan P. Enlow was born c 1804 in Kentucky. He first married Rachel Haskins (1807-1862), and she was the mother of all his children. About a year after her death, he married Mariah Elizabeth Holland (Hollen) on the 30 Dec 1863. They supposedly divorced on 11 Nov 1870, but when I wrote to the county clerks office, they couldn't give me any information on the divorce. I don't know who this woman was or what happened to her,, afterward,, Jonathan's third wife was Nancy Tucker Lankford. When they married on 24 May 1883, he would have been 78 or 79 years old." Indiana, first to Matildia Enlow, the daughter of Jesse and Anna Highfill Enlow. Matilda was born, Oct.27,1812, died Sept.22,1892. James sencond wife was Matilda (Tucker) Carroll. James may have been born in White Co. Tennesee, or in Kentucky. Jacob Tucker: born, Aug.14,1827 died Nov. 1,1903. Jacob’s first marriage was to Mary Flemming, born Sept. 5,1838, died, July 12,1860. Second marriage was to Annette Haskins. To distinguish him from his Uncle Jacob Tucker which had been in Indiana before 1840, Jacob Tucker was called Black Jake. Black Jake was born in Indiana. Eden Cemetery. Jacob Tucker ( Red Jake) born, January28,1836, died, June 14,1908. Married Margaret (Peggy ) Eastridge born March 22,1836 died, Aug.18,1878. She was the daughter of Isaac Eastridge. Jesse Tucker born, Sept.20,1837. Married first Ruth Eastridge born July 1,1833. Died March 22, 1874. Ruth was the daughter of Isaac Eastridge. There were no children to this union. Jesse Tucker’s second marriage was to Arena (Smith) Denbo born, May 13,1849 and died, May 2,1910. The daughter of George Smith. Arena had been first married to Joseph Asbury Denbo. They had divorced and in a fight over their two children, there had been a gun fight involving the Smiths and Denbo relations. Arena’s brother was killed in fighting. Joseph Asbury Denbo was a son of Jacob Denbo and grandson of Elizabeth (Tucker) Denbo, and a great grandson of Jacob Tucker. Joseph Denbo moved to Indian Territory (Oklahoma) in 1870. Jesse Tucker was also a great grandson of the same Jacob Tucker as Joseph Denbo, and were therefore second cousins.(There is an account of the gunfight mentioned above in the History of Orange Co. Indiana.) Alcy Tucker born, Sept.2,1838, died, Jan. 6,1925. Married Leroy Gilliatt. Leroy was born March 29,1829. He died, Aug.4,1924.
