George MCILVAINE  [Parents] was born 1754. He died 1844. George married Ruth UNKNOWN.

George, Greer and Catherine inherited from their father, John, the 300 acre farm located on the banks of the Conodoguinet Creek, a tributary of the Suquehanna River near Carlisle. George and Greer sold their portion of the land to John Shoemaker by deed dated April 25, 1785. Then they with their wives crossed the mountains to their new home in Somerset Township, Washington county, PA.

George McIlvaine, although he did not have a deed for the 109 acre tract at the middle of Calydon, resided on this part of the larger 407 acre tract from the time of its survey in 1788, and possibly as early as 1785. He is believed to have built a large double log house near the southern boundary near the creek, which was later replaced by a large farm house. This farm passed from the family presumably at the death of George in the early 1840's to the McDonough family, and then to Frank Watson. On this farm, George raised his large family. It is usually referred to as the George McIlvaine homestead.

At the time of the transfer of the deed to this property on June 21, 1815, George also received from Greer an undivided half interest in the easternmost portion of Calydon containing 158 acres and 54 perches. At the marriage of George's son George to Greer's daughter Jane, this farm was given to the children, and was known thereafter as the "little" George farm.

He died intestate before 1784 as shown by the tax rolls and deeds on file at carlisle, leaving his wife, Mary, and children George, Greer, and Catherine. Their home, Cat's Cabin, was situated on the banks of the beautiful but treacherous Conodoguinet, and only a few yards from the stream. The name of the creek was said to have come from the Indians, who were trying to warn white children "cannot go in it".
