OUR VETERANS MEMORIAL

The Findlay, Ohio Veterans Memorial is located in the center of Maple Grove Cemetery, just North of West Main Cross Street and East of Interstate 75 (Exit 157). The Memorial was dedicated in 1935, when the old Soldiers Monument (Civil War Statue and 4 Confederate Cannons) were moved there from the Hancock County Courthouse. It was established as a lasting tribute to area soldiers lost in combat. It was last updated when stone crosses were added in the northeast corner to honor casualties of the Vietnam War.

This year, the veterans of Findlay (and their friends and families) will undertake a major (and long overdue) renovation of this memorial. This website has been created specifically to document that effort.

The mound's most distinguishing features are the podium (shown below), a Civil War statue, and 4 Civil War cannons. The cannons (1864 vintage Confederate Parrott Rifles) are of particular interest. They were confiscated by the Union Army and moved here (possibly from Chicamauga) immediately after the Civil War ended. An investigation into the history of these rare Civil War relics is underway, and the results of that research will be posted here.

It is also noteworthy that five area veterans have been awarded this nations highest honor: The Congressional Medal of Honor. The history of these five heroic individuals is being investigated and will also be included here.
