I would like to thank all of the

the staff of The Highlander for
their outstanding support on this
project. I am looking forward
to reading what they'll have
for us next and hope that
more of you will join them.

I started this eNewsletter with
one goal in mind; to give Yankees
fans an open forum for publishing
their thoughts on their favorite
team and share them with others.

An Embarrassment of Riches
by Amani Herron The Hitman25@hotmail.com

Writer's Note: Looking for insightful commentary on the New York Yankees and baseball in general? Well then keep reading... unless you're a BoSox fan (sorry no pictures). Beyond laughing at the Yankees playing keep away with the Red Sox pitching hopes, this newsletter offers a fan's perspective on the happenings within 161st and River Ave. in the Bronx. This is the 100th anniversary season of Frank Farrell and Bill Devery buying the defunct Baltimore Orioles franchise, and giving birth to the winningest team in all of sports. Its time the Yanks had a publication to mirror their quest to be the best!

The New York Yankees do not need seven starting pitchers. The New York Yankees do not need Hideki Matsui, Raul Mondesi or Rondell White (take your pick). The New York Yankees do not need to pay $17 million for a minor league third baseman. The fact of the matter is the New York Yankees have infinitely more than they need. The New York Yankees don't have to try to do everything they can to improve themselves year in and year out. To borrow a phrase from Kellogg's, 'they just do'.

This commitment to winning is matched only by the historical precedent set by dynasties of old. Simply walk up to Yankee Stadium and count the championship seasons. Yes, there are twenty-six.

The richest memories any team can dream of, are just another part of Bronx lore.
Take a seat behind home plate and gaze up at the facade; you are in "The House That Ruth Built." Marvel at the field where Lou Gehrig delivered his inspirational "goodbye speech" on the Fourth of July.

Make your way into the right-field seats, and relive the ambient sounds following Roger Maris' 61st homerun in '61, Joe Girardi's triple in game six of the 1996 World Series, and Tino Martinez's dual blast; first in 1998 against San Diego, then in 2001 against Arizona.

If you can, navigate your way to "the black" (which used to be "white") and remember Reggie Jackson's third consecutive homerun on three consecutive pitches, from three different Dodgers, or Don Mattingly's first, and only, postseason homerun in game two versus Seattle.

The Yankees are the richest team in baseball. The richest memories any team can dream of, are just another part of Bronx lore.

P.S. My deep condolences to the McDonough family. I always envied Boston, not for their sports teams, but their sports writers. McDonough was as good as any of them.
