What is Nitrox?
Nitrox or Enriched air has more oxygen than regular compressed air. The greater the Oxygen content the lower the nitrogen content. You learned in your open water class that nitrogen is the gas in air that we concern ourselves with for decompression limits.
Isn’t Nitrox just for deep diving?
No. Nitrox is not to be confused with Tri-mix, which is for deep diving. Nitrox has the same depth limits as air
Why should I dive with Nitrox?
The main reasons are to increase your no-decompression bottom time, decrease the risk of nitrogen narcosis, reduce surface interval, reduce fatigue, eliminate carbon dioxide headaches and extend diving years for older divers. Used properly, Nitrox can be much safer and more enyoable!
Who should not dive with Nitrox?
Anyone who should not dive with air. Same limitations.
Can I use my regulator and BCD on Nitrox cylinders?
Yes! As long as the oxygen content does not exceed 40%. Which is the maximum for Nitrox certification anyway.
Do I need different tanks for nitrox?
Yes & no. Nitrox tanks must be dedicated to nitrox only. An air tank can be "cleaned" for nitrox use.
You can fill a nitrox tank with the same oxygen percentage as air if you want.
Will I feel different during or after the dive?
Many divers report warmer dives, reduced fatigue, reduced air consumption, and a general feeling of well being.
Is Nitrox popular?
Yes! Nitrox has been accepted by N.O.A.A., IANTD, SDI. SSI, TDI,NAUI, NASDS, and PADI and will soon be the breathing mixture of choice for hundreds of thousands of educated divers. Five major universities in the USA have started teaching Nitrox in their diving programs.
How long does it take to be certified?
About six hours of classroom instruction.
Are there risks involved?
Yes. That's why you need proper training.
