What Is Capital Station BBS

Capital Station BBS is a computer [B]ulletin [B]oard [S]ytem that allows computer users with a modem and terminal program to directly dial into my computer and participate in local & worldwide message systems, download files, play online games, and much much more.

Capital Station is currently available by a dial up connection only, and is a free call within the New York Capital District, and access to the system is always FREE excluding any toll charges or long distance bills the caller may incur. Plans are in the works to allow telnet access to internet callers that run a telnet client. Information will be posted when this is available.

Computer Bulletin Boards are the ORIGINAL forum of personal online communications and pre-date the World Wide Web by nearly a decade, and Capital Station is carrying on this form of telecommunications, as are tens of thousands of other SysOps around the globe, out of shear love of the hobby, and for the usefulness and superiority this forum offers over the world wide web in many aspects.

Capital Station BBS is also a participant and member in FidoNet International, which similar to BBS's themselves, is the FIRST, and oldest, non-commercial, government, medical, or institutional worldwide computer network in existance, and pre-dates the world wide web and internet, and can provide public online communication to parts of the globe where the internet is actually still banned.

Capital Station is also proud to be the Echomail Coordinator (the system responsible for distributing worldwide FidoNet message areas in our region) of FidoNet Net267.

The BBS runs on EleBBS software as it's main shell, utilizing many add on programs that add features for the caller to the BBS to access.

The worldwide networking of messages and files is achieved using FrontDoor as the front end mailer, FMail as the message processor, and TICK as the file network processor. The fidonet mail is gained by the use of a ftp script file. The script is put into operation by set times called "mail events" The application which is uses the script file is transx fidonet / internet transporter, these files fly over the roadrunner network which keeps costs low and it also allows the BBS to be up ** Waiting for Calls ** more hours within the day. The roadrunner network will also allow telnet to come to Capital Station BBS.

All of these software packages work in conjunction with each other to provide a system that is automated It also allows a system that is feature packed and content rich, that should provide the average caller with a variety of activities to entertain themselves for time on end.

Capital Station is not a common carrier, or value added service provider, but is run as a hobby on a computer system located right in the living room of my own home.

Access is granted to the public to access my computer on a "GUEST" basis, provided they conduct themselves in a proper manner in the public areas I provide.

All information provided by the callers is kept strictly confidential, and absolutely no other party has, nor can obtain by ANY means (unlike the internet), access to personal information.

If a secure system for you to engage in a variety of online activities sounds like your cup of joe, then the pots perking. Come on in and give it a look!
