Gerrard Spencer was the son of Michael Spencer, adn was baptized at Stratford, England, in 1576. He was the grandson of John Spencer who married Ann Gerrard, a daughter of Sir William Gerrard, Lord Mayor of London, 1555. It was from this grandparent that he recieved his name, which was provincialized to Jared in New England. Gerrard (Jared) Spencer, pioneer to America, came to cambridge, Mass. in 1632 with his five sons, John, Thomas, William, Michael and Gerrard, jr. John returned to England; (Seargent) Thomas, born in England in 1607, settled in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1637. He was a seargent and soldier in the Pequot Indian War. He married Sarah, daughter of Nathaniel Bearding. The third son was William, whose grandduaghter, Mary Case, married into the Alderman family. Michael, the fourth son, settled in Haddam, Conn. Gerrard Jr, born 1610, died 1685, settled at Haddam, Connecticut, married Hannah (unknown). He joined his son, Micahel, in Haddam, Conn. in 1662 where he lived out his remaining days.
William Spencer born abt 1611 married Agnes Harris.
