Child's Party Dress

The story behind this dress is that it belonged to a little girl who wore it to a party for the daughter of Jefferson Davis, the Confederate President. The gentleman that it came from was a collector of vintage and he had beautiful things and he told the story. However, the story is the only provenance I have. I would date it to about 1860, but I could very easily be wrong.

The majority of the dress is a celery green silk brocade. The overskirt has a balloon scallop appearance. This is achieved by pleating the overskirt in 4 areas 9 1/2” from the waist and by ruching (tiny pleating) the excess fabric into the waist. The underskirt and the “v” bodice insert is brilliant yellow and is trimmed with rows of pleated salmon silk.

The salmon trim has come loose on the shoulders and in two areas on the sleeves, but it is intact and just needs a stitch. ( I am afraid to do any repairs on this dress because I have no background in museum restoration) There is one spot on the salmon trim on the underskirt. There is even a little pocket in the right front of the underskirt. It is interfaced with a shiny, stiffer (yet very lightweight fabric)There are two rows of 5” black lace around the lower edge of the underskirt.

There is also black lace trim accenting the “v” insert of the bodice and around the sleeve opening. There are 9 pieces of boning in the bodice. The back of the bodice has 28 tiny eyelets to lace the dress together.

There is a doubled length of cotton threaded through the eyelets, but I would guess this was not what was originally used. There are cotton strings at the top of center back to tie it together. The bottom of the bodice has a double row of piping. The lower edge of the underskirt has three major stains and three minor ones. The lace hides obscures these stains. There are two small stains on the overskirt. They are very minuscule. The measurements are: chest-22”, waist-22”, underarm to waist-5 1/2”, from basque point (waist) to bottom of overskirt-18 1/2”, bottom of basque (waist) to hem-29”.

19th C. French Dress

This is an exquisite 19th century French lace young child's dress which was purchased in Paris.

It is all hand made and bordered by two rows of lace at the hem and a row of lace around the collar and cuffs. The dress has all of its original buttons and the bodice section is decorated by rows of vertical lace. The dress measures 24" long and 9" from shoulder to shoulder.

This dress is a beautiful little jewel such as you would see children wearing in in old paintings.

One of the cutest little girl's dresses I have ever seen! It is made of white cotton and trimmed with tucks and embroidered trim. The bodice is different from most that we have seen - the front triangle buttons to the shoulders and can fold down if desired. The buttons at the shoulders are mother-of-pearl. The embroidery at the waist is very elaborate and quite beautiful. In fact, the whole dress is quite a little beauty.

Mint condition little girl's dress of the period. Made of a white striped cotton. Features darts to mirror adult women's clothing and piping at the waistline. Buttons up the back with mother-of-pearl buttons.

Nice Civil War period little boy's dress made of white cotton. There are 13 tiny tucks in the skirt - all sewn by hand. There are also three tucks at the sleeve and the sleeves and neckline are trimmed with hand-embroidered trim. Simply delightful!!! The waist is all gathered and closes with two carved mother of pearl buttons.

Ivory cotton play dress with rows of tiny red dots. Short straight sleeves with self-fabric ruffle. Piped sleeves and waist. Back button closure. Handsewn. Gathered bodice is lined in a heavy cotton. Hem faced with heavy cotton.

A terrific pair of children's black leather shoes with wide square toes. The front half of each shoe is of shiny patened leather, while the back is of black leather with a lightly embossed cross-hatched design. Shoe openings are edged with a deep blue silk tape. There are 6 sets of brass grommets for lacing up the front opening of each shoe, and shoes are lined with fine linen. No rights or lefts.
