Ash is beaten by Sabrina, the Psychic Gym leader in Saffron City. But a mysterious man tells him that the only way to beat a psychic POKeMON is with a Ghost POKeMON, so Ash heads off to POKeMON Tower in Lavender Town.

Ash gets spooked by the Ghosts in POKeMON Tower, but then, after a near-death experience, Ash and Pikachu realize that the Ghosts only want to have fun. Ash takes Haunter along with him, and he heads back to Saffron.

Ash returns to Saffron City with Haunter in tow. He boldly challenges Sabrina for a second time, when he realizes Haunter seems to have disappeared just when Sabrina sent out Kadabra. Ash is horror-stricken, and is very close to being sent back into the toybox (did you mention the toybox in the other episode?), when the mysterious man appears and teleports them outside the gym, where he tells them of Sabrina's troubled childhood and her psychic powers. The man is obviously Sabrina's father, although Ash seems to be slow-witted about this, and thinks that he was a photographer.

I forget how Haunter comes back, but Ash challenges Sabrina for a third time, but Haunter disappears again. Ash is about ready to give up, but Pikachu steps out to challenge the powerful Pokémon. However valiant his efforts, Pikachu is getting the snot kicked out of him when Haunter reappears, making many strange faces at Sabrina, causing her to laugh, something she hasn't done in years. Her psychic link with Kadabra causes it to begin to laugh as well, rendering it incapable of fighting. Sabrina's dad declares Ash the winner, and he receives the Marshbadge. He, Brock, and Misty leave Saffron city with Sabrina and her parents waving after them.

Ash gets his hat stolen by Mankey, a Monkey-like POKeMON. Fortunately, Rocket appears, and makes Mankey really, really mad. Then, it evolves into Primeape, and it beats up Rocket. Then Primeape teams up with Ash, and the quest continues.

The group arrives and Celadon City, and when Misty stops to go to a perfume store, Ash gets impatient, and stomps in a says to the people there that perfume is a waste of money. But when Ash goes to the POKeMON gym, he finds out that the people int he store are also the people that run the gym! They refuse to battle him for the badge.

Meanwhile Rocket plans to sneak into the gym and get the secret perfume recipe. But, the evolution of Oddish, Gloom. He stinks out Team Rocket.

Ash dresses up as a girl and gets into the gym. But eventually, Pikachu reveals his identity. Then, Ash gets in a battle with the leader, Erika. They fight, but Team Rocket does sometihng, and the gym catches on fire. Everyone runs out, but Gloom is stuck inside. Ash feels he can save it, even though Gloom smeels very, very bad. Erika tell him that he only smells to those that he doesn't trust. Ash runs in, and gets Gloom, who doesn't smell. After he being it out, Erika give him the badge, and then the group continues on it's adventure.
