5) What is the difference between the Internet and the Web?

When did the Internet start?

When did the Web start? 

 The Internet is a collection of millions of network of computers, while the web is the way in which we access information over the Internet. The Department of defense developed the Internet in 1969, called ARPNET.

What is the difference between a GIF and JPG (when is the correct time to use each etc.)

What are ways to "speed up" graphic load time?

 Graphics are used to make web page more interesting.  Too many graphics can distract a reader from the content.

Some differences between GIF and JPG are:

 .gif files can be animated, .jpg files cannot

    .gif can have a maximum of 265 colors, .jpg files use millions of colors

    .gif files are used for drawings, while .jpg files are used for pictures

 

(5) Explain BCC.  Why/when should BCC be used? (versus cc or To)  Blind Carbon Copy (BBC) is an email option that will secretly send the email to people listed under the BBC option.
(5) Why is the subject of an email so important (3 or more reasons) ? The subject of an email is important because people will decide to read the email or not based on the subject or a poorly worded subject might result in the email classified as spam.
(5) Why is the title of a website so important (3 or more reasons)   The title of a website is important because: search engines will assign the site a rating based on the title and people will judge the site on its title.

State several advantages/disadvantages of each over other forms
 of synchronous and asynchronous communications?
 Synchronous communication is communication that takes place in real-time.  Some examples are: telephones, instant messaging, face to face, and VOIP.  Some advantages of synchronous communication are an immediate response and a disadvantage is that both people have to be ready to talk at the same time.

 Asynchronous communication does not take place in real time.  Some examples are: email, snail mail, answering machines, and computer memory (RAM).  The disadvantage is that the communication only takes place as quickly as the slowest component.  Responses might take days to arrive.  The advantage is that you can leave a message, and both parties do not have to be ready to talk.
(5) What are the differences (2 or more)  between search engines, meta search engines and directories?   Different search engines use different algorithms to rate websites.  For example a search engine give more weight to meta tags, or it might give more weight to the number of links pointing to a website.  Directories contain less information, but it is organized into clickable categories.
(5) What is spyware?  Where does it come from?
What problems does it cause?  What can you do about it?
 Spyware is a form of malware.  Spyware programs run on your computer, record what websites you visit, record email addresses, record passwords and other personal informaiton, report that information over the internet, display pop-ups, and cause random crashes.  To combat spyware, use removal tools such as Adaware, or Spybot Search and Destroy.  A combination is usually recommended because thousands of forms of spyware exist, and a single program is unlikely to catch all of them.
(5) What are computer viruses?  What problems does they cause? 
What can you do about it?
Computer viruses are malicious programs designed to harm your computer.  They can cause your computer to reboot (sasser), reformat your hard drive, or cause any number of creative of problems.  To combat viruses, use anti-virus software such as Norton anti-virus or Symantec Anti-virus.
