Well, after a long year in Iraq serving with the North Carolina National Guard, I'm back to tackle the design needs here in the United States. Although I made some improvements to the life of our soldiers, the most important was the improvements to the life of Iraqi citizens. In addition to helping out with a base store and shower buildings for our small camp in Eastern Iraq, I helped with renovations of local schools to enable Iraqi children the first opportunities to go to school in a long time. The most memorable was the design of a Women's Center for Iraqi women to bring their children for after-school childcare. There were offices set up for women to meet as well as a fitness and wellness center for the women to get the proper exercise and nutrition they need.
Even though the building materials and the scope of drawings were different, the design flow went the same as usual. There is always a Schematic Phase where meetings are conducted to find the complete scope of work the client is looking for. In Iraq there are no strict building codes but the design was based on overall International Building Code regulations. All drawings done in Iraq were metric (meters), as opposed to the metric style I was used to, working with a German company on a foundation design of a huge printing press for Fayetteville Observer. The metric system in Germany was in millimeters (Standard SI units). If there is a need for metric drawings, we can perform those for you also at WSN Designs.
