PATRIOTS DENY FIGHTING SCOTS
By Dean Parziale: Special to The Pilot, Appeared Wednesday, October 10th, 2007
The Pinecrest boys' soccer team recorded their third consecutive shutout in a 5-0 victory over the visiting Fighting Scots of Scotland County Monday at the John Williams Athletic Complex.
The Patriots also ran their unbeaten streak to 11 games, improved to 8-0 in the Mid-Southeast Conference and 12-2-1 overall, but still find themselves just outside a top-15 ranking in the weekly state 4-A coaches poll. "It took us a while to get going tonight," said Pinecrest coach Larry Martin in reference to the Patriots' knocking in four second-half goals. "We came out very flat in the first, (there wasn't) a whole lot of energy out there."
It would take the Patriots 29 minutes of the first half to find a goal, and it would come suddenly and seemingly out of nowhere. Junior defender Brent Foote would gather a loose ball 20 yards from the Patriots' goal and find senior Coby Kavanaugh with a long pass 40 yards downfield. Kavanaugh controlled the ball from his chest to ground, quickly firing a wicked left-footed strike inside the right post for the 1-0 advantage.
The flash goal would take some of the steam out of the Scotland side that Martin felt had "out-hustled" his team in the half.
Pinecrest would find its rhythm after the restart. Eight minutes after the break, sophomore Sam Ivey went knifing through a crowd in front of goal before heading home a corner kick delivered by classmate Thomas Goulden for a 2-0 Patriot lead. It was Ivey's first goal as a Patriot.
At the hour mark, Goulden would put the match out of reach with a topspin volley from 20 yards out, with the diving ball puzzling the Scots' keeper on the way to the third goal for the Patriots. Five minutes later, sophomore striker Ryan Osterman would also record his first goal as a Patriot, running on to a through ball played by John Kropp and finding space under the keeper.
The final goal came in the last minute. Michael Pigg, hustling to the end, created a turnover and beating the keeper for his first goal of the season. Brad McKeever and Matt Scott would combine for the shutout in net.
"Everyone took part tonight, and actually the guys who came off the bench played with more energy," Martin said. "We're learning new chemistry with different players due to injuries."
Pinecrest travels to Richmond County tonight to take on the second-place Raiders (7-1). The only conference loss suffered by the Raiders came against the Patriots. The action begins with the junior varsity contest at 5:30 p.m., with the varsity clash following at 7 p.m.
The Pinecrest jayvees also defeated the Scotland jayvees by a 6-0 score. The Patriots' Gray Anderson recorded a hat trick in the win.
