PATRIOTS SLIP BY DOUGLAS BYRD
By Dean Parziale: Special to The Pilot, Appeared Friday, October 5th, 2007
A brief downpour just before kickoff created some greasy field conditions Wednesday night in Fayetteville where the Pinecrest boys' soccer team managed to escape with a slim 1-0 victory over the Eagles of Douglas Byrd High School. The win kept Pinecrest perfect in Mid-Southeastern Conference play at 8-0, while improving its season mark to 11-2-1.
Complications would arise for Pinecrest in the form of the wet field conditions and slippery ball, coupled with the narrow 50-yard wide practice football field the Eagles use for soccer matches and a determined opponent who had taken the Patriots to overtime in the season's first get-together. But, just as in the first match between the two, Pinecrest would find a late goal, then hang on.
The first 40 minutes saw numerous goal-scoring opportunities for Pinecrest, however the finishing efforts either squirted by the mark or were saved by the outstanding play of the Byrd keeper. The Patriots' closest chance to score came about 20 minutes in when junior Matt Carriker lofted a throw-in that senior Coby Kavanaugh headed off the crossbar.
A dogged Pinecrest side took to the field after the restart looking to break down the packed-in Eagle defense. Finally, in the 60th minute, a sharp combination of passes would free Kavanaugh down the right side where he managed to sneak one under the diving net minder, the ball having quickly swung from left wing to right via sophomore Thomas Goulden and junior Michael Hieronymus.
A rock-solid effort on defense the rest of the way by Patriot keeper Brad McKeever and the back line of sophomores Taylor Miles, Sam Ivey and Dylan Cole and juniors Eric Parziale and Brandon Wilkins would ensure both the shutout and victory.
Pinecrest gets a short break, then will host Scotland High School Monday at the John Williams Athletic Center. The junior varsity team starts the action at 5:30 p.m., with the varsity teams taking the field at 7 p.m.
The Pinecrest jayvees took on the O'Neal School jayvees earlier, posting a 3-2 win. Scoring for Pinecrest were Gray Anderson, Neil Lewis and Austin Dunlop.
