ARE YOU MÉTIS?

(Mixed-Blood)

Métis: a mixed-blood ethnic race of people who are of American Indian

ancestry mixed with the blood of European, African or Asian peoples.

Ethnic: of or relating to sizable groups of people with a common,
distinctive racial, national, religious, linguistic or cultural heritage.

The Métis People of today are a combination of different races
of people who derive from American Indian ancestry. They could be
full-bloods who cannot gain entry into their Tribal Rolls because
of insufficient paper work or because the Rolls have been closed.
They also include the mixed-bloods whose ancestors were of
American Indian origin but do not have enough percentage
of American Indian blood to be on Tribal Rolls or only have
a small percentage of American Indian blood and they are
just as proud of their heritage.

The Métis People vary from each other on religious beliefs
just as in the rest of the world. This may include
Christianity, Judaism and other European religions. This may
also include belief in American Indian Spirituality. It makes
no difference as long as the belief brings one closer to the Creator

Over the centuries the Métis People have developed into a distinct
ethnic race of North American people. Many full-bloods who live on
Government sponsored Reservations and some who have left the Reservations
do not accept the part-bloods because of the Bureau of Indian Affairs
enforced "blood quota" or because of the laws imposed upon the Reservations
for rations, money, educational opportunity or land grants. The other races
do not accept part-bloods because of their American Indian blood.
The Métis People are tired of hiding their American Indian blood.
In fact, they are beginning to stand up and say "I'm proud of my
American Indian ancestry. I do not like what has been done to
my ancestors and what is now being done to my family and myself!"

Today our Government does not recognize the existence of our people.
In Canada it is a different story. By the Constitution Act of 1982,
the Canadian Federal Government recognized the Métis People as an Indian
(Indigenous) People in their Constitution. In Canada a person is
recognized as Indian if they are:

1) First Nation People - Indigenous
2)Inuit - Eskimo
3)Métis - Mixed-blood

In the hope of creating a strong future for our People there are
a number of Métis who are forming a Nation. This Nation has been
designated as the Métis Nation of the United States and is
governed by its own National Council
