MOSES F. FOWLER

Born ca. 1839, Moses is the son of John Fowler. Moses is the brother of Martha Fowler who matrried Lewis Thomas. The 1860 Union County Census lists Moses as 21 years old and living at the home of Lewis and Martha Thomas. Dated 19 Sep 1861, Moses F. Fowler married Frances Elva Austin. The bondsman was B. A. Austin. Frances is the daughter of Jonathan Austin. Moses and Frnces had a daughter named Aramenta C. Fowler.

On 20 Feb 1862, Moses F. Fowler enlisted in CSA Co B, 43rd Reg. NC. Lewis Thomas and the husband of Lewis's sister Milly enlisted in this unit. On 15 Aug 1863, Moses F. Fowler deserted with his brother-in-law Lewis Thomas. Lewis was taken into custody and Moses returned to duty in Mar-May 1864. Moses was killed at Cold Harbor on or about 2 Jun 1864. I have found no widow's pension in the name of Moses Fowler.

Moses's wife used the name Frances, Elva and Malinda. In the Januaray 1866 term of the Union County Court of Pleas and Quaters, Elva Fowler, widow and relect of Moses Fowler deceased, petitioned the court to divide the properties that once belonged to Moses and herself. In the petiton, Elva states that Moses died in 1864. R. W. Tarlton, J. R. Winchester, Evan Smith, and Coleeman Stewart were apppointed to view and divide the estate. They were ordered to lay off to the Elva "one bed & furniture, one loom, one wheel & cards, one Bible & Hym book & put her in pocession of the same". Later estate records were administered by Thomas A. Fowler. He was the brother of Moses Fowler.

Fances Fowler married second to Rheuben H. James on 30 Dec 1866. The marriage license lists her as "Malinda E. Fowler".
